Democrats Unveil Unemployment Extension Bill, Republicans Object to Passage

Senate Democrats “said Thursday they have reached a deal to extend unemployment insurance benefits to the nearly 2 million jobless workers across the country who are in danger of running out of assistance by the end of the year,” the AP reports.

The agreement would give an additional 14 weeks of benefits to jobless workers in all 50 states. Workers in states with an unemployment rate at 8.5 percent or above would receive six weeks on top of that.

An attempt to unanimously pass the House bill, H.R. 3548, with the Senate’s compromise version inserted in place of the House provisions met objection by Senate Republicans today on the floor.

Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) said that Republicans needed time to review the legislation, offer their ideas on the bill and see a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score of the measure.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) quipped that Republicans had found a new stalling tactic: waiting for a CBO score.

Update (10/13): As has been noted in the comments section below, the Majority Leader has added the unemployment extension bill to the legislative calendar. No vote and / or debate time has been scheduled yet.

Another stall tactic for sure on the part of the GOP
I can only urge those stalling there is an election coming in 2010. You might feel warm and comfy today but that feeling won’t last long after the next election. You people are playing with peoples lives and feeding families. I doubt any one of you have had your jobs taken away from you as I did after 35 years but its no fun. I played by all the rules and paid my taxes and bought a home, raised a family and saved money for the future. Well I lost my income and lost my home and lost my health care and lost all of my savings and yes my 401K tanked too. You have no problem bailing out the banks and wall street and GM and Chrysler but you have no problem watching families go under. I am so ashamed of what Washington has become and I was a member of the GOP for over 30 years, well that is coming to an end today. You have lost my respect and more importantly you have lost my vote.I know I am only one, but I am one of a growing number across America. I am not looking for a handout just some help so I can find a job before I am left living in a car. Please pass this benefit extension peoples lives are in your hands, don’t you think if there were jobs we would have one.

I could not agree with you more!!! The CEO’s and corporate pigs who have always had money or a nest egg to fall on could care less about other working Americans. I hope they choke on their bonus’s. Without us they would be nothing…..they would have nothing!! The first concerns of the Govt are to bail out more banks or an auto industry who definitely created their own crap and downfall. This makes absolutely no sense. Several of us who live check to check, struggle and still pay our taxes for years are not entitled? I don’t know about you but I am about ready to give up. I have lost everything, have no income or any more unemployment to help me out at a time I am so desperately in need. I want so very much to work, but if there is no jobs any longer in this country what the heck are we suppose to freaking do? I want to have complete faith in O’bama, I still want to believe he has allot of enthusiasm and a strong will and heart for this country, but if more is not done much sooner than later with our economy I am going to remain very scared and pessimistic for my future. I seem to always blame the Republicans, my whole life I always felt they were greased by the wealthy and never really believed they truly cared about the majority working-class. They should put themselves in our place and just see how well they can sleep at night. Maybe we should all just pack our tents and camp in their backyards, or maybe all those greedy CEO’s could possibly invite others to join us from all those other countries they sent all our jobs to.

So I exhausted my benefits 2 weeks ago and so did 400,000 other Americans in the month of September. It an extension does go through will It even be available to me or am I out of luck. You have to have a strong reference just to get a job at McDonald’s since they hire so many immigrants now.

      • Ryder

Absolutely. I have encountered that immigrant stuff myself. In order to get a job Americans have to be bilingual. What kind of crap is that?? If they cannot speak English when they get here they should not ever have a preference over real Americans. We are being pushed out of our own country and politicians have approved that. What happened to America as it should be??

      • Jerry

It’s not just illegal Immigrants. I was told this years ago but as my job has shifted I have seen the practice of at least the technology sector. In the last few start up companies I worked at it was kind of sad to see that I was only one of a few in the small company that was American born. As time went by I took a contract at a bigger component manufacture down here in Orange county and seen that the ratio was about the same or worse. That 1000s of employees were legal through H1 visa – Thanks US Chamber of Commerce for siding with big business. I feel the company’s that do work here for technology are only here to reap the benefits of what remanding talent edge we have left. Other then that it would all be over seas. Well they found it cheaper to bring in labor- would have made sense to me to bring it to places in the US that are now considered the rust belt. But no their is no loyalty to the US or our infrastructure. Like you others I have worked my whole life from age 14 – 8 years in Navy. Dedicated my life to being the best of what I do in a field that is still in demand. I have been off work for lil over a year now. I cant even find lesser paying jobs as a tech! Greed in America Capitalist have hurt the American work force and it’s now stations like fox GOP controlled propaganda that any support for us the workers is labeled Socialist. If I remember It is “We The People” Not the “give us your tired and poor” that made Americas foundation. I want all of our Jobs back!!! As well as an America for our youth to have pride in. Americans are now begining to see the real face of these leaders and I guess we are not happy.
Send the Aliens Back!!! Fix the US infrastructure. Place companies in smaller towns – rebound their economy’s – and this not only will help strengthen America but also will cut down on fuel consumption as does not anybody remember our parents did not have to drive 45 miles to get to work!!!!
Sorry don’t mean to bug ya!!!

    • Ryder

Same old, same old with the damn Republicans thinking they are great political Gods. There is no reason why any rating, code or anything else should stop the extension that is critical. They have no idea what it’s like to be in our position and never will sorry to say. They are playing with people’s lives and refuse to listen even to their own President. How these experts figure the recession is over is beyond me and everyone else. They just want to make things look good on paper for their benefit. Certainly not for us. Reality of the situation does NOT match what the experts say. With hundreds of people applying for each job how can Washington even come close to thinking lying to us is OK? Americans are NOT dummies and we know what the politicians are up to. Pass the extension and help the suffering for a change. If we have to have extensions for another year…so what? We paid into this country most of our lives and deserve help when we need it.

    • John

What all you people are reacting to is the Media trying to dump all this on the GOP. If you investigated what happened in the process you would be more mad at your own Democrats for stalling the extension of emergency U.C. benefits bill. Remember the Democrats have the majority. They (Democrats) can’t add twice as much pork to the emergency U.C. bill and then say that the Republicans are denying benefits to the unemployed who need it. I don’t think either Democrat or Republican wants to Deny Emergency U.C. Benefits to everyone who needs it including ME!

Here is what happened in the process—–

“One of the interesting things about the massive Senate Democratic majority during this session of Congress is that they chose not to pass an extension of unemployment benefits that would go for a year, or one that set up an algorithm, say as long as the unemployment rate stayed above 8% in a state, the unemployed would continue to receive benefits. Instead, every couple of months they put forward a bill that extends unemployment benefits for a couple of months while attaching to the bill some pork-laden spending.

On the other hand, Republicans are not unaware that primary voters throughout the nation are signaling that they favor legislation that would not expand the deficit any more. So, we’re left with a massive game of chicken, with more than a million unemployed waiting for the crash, knowing they’re the only ones likely to be harmed in the devastation that results.

This time, the Democrats under Harry Reid’s leadership decided to attach a $100 billion stimulus plan to the bill. They used the same tired argument that this stimulus is necessary to keep states from laying off (you guessed it) teachers, police, and firefighters. However, they were unable to convince any Republicans to join them. Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) made the apparently outrageous request that the $35 billion for the benefits be considered and passed in isolation from the stimulus. This was rejected out of hand by Reid.

So now, the senators will all go home for the Fourth of July. I assume that they’ll all show up at parades. I assume they’ll all give long-winded speeches about the grandeur of our great nation. My guess is that few of them will actually waste a breath speaking or even thinking about the million of hardworking Americans who will find it more difficult to pay their mortgage, or buy groceries, or purchase food for their own bbq. Their America is one that politicians of both parties like to ignore. They don’t make a lot of noise, or donate a ton of money. They don’t work on Wall Street, so politicians of both parties don’t line up to ensure that they’ll be able to rob us again in a few years. They just want the chance to provide for their own families.”

The party of No blocking unempolyment extensions. Good job republicans. Please remember this on election day. AM Rock

  3. jason siniscalchi

Every republican should be fucking ashamed of themselves today…more than usual.

    • kim

OMG I couldn’t have said it better. I am well educated and usually well spoken and a mother of four whose unemployment ended last week. The only words that come to mind since I got up and heard the news this morning is “fuck the republicans”! Thanks!

  4. Sushiboo

I wonder if the Republicans were told that their pay is suspended as of today by one week for every day they delay the bill, with no possible retroactive recovery of their losses until the bill passes, just how long it would take them to put their partisan politics in their pockets and think of their constituents whom they seem to have forgotten and which are deserting them in droves. I bet they would pass this bill in record time.

  5. Novachic

I am deeply disappointed and ashamed of the GOP today and agree with Raymond T. I am a Republican and will definately be watching and voting, as always, in the next election. Let’s bail out another bank, but nothing for the working men and women that lost their jobs. It’s a sad day in America.

  6. Michael B

I second that Raymond T. I’m a registered Republican. I can’t foresee voting Republican again. I have BA Degree and had never had trouble finding employment and had been employed long term. I’ve put in hundreds of applications (even a hundred in a single month). In one year since layoff, I’ve gotten 1 phone interview….ONE! I’ve realized that the Republican party is all about gimmicks, games, propaganda, outright lies, and obstruction off any legislation that could actually benefit the people. In case anyone has forgotten, the first big bailout package came under Bush, while all they do now is point finger at Obama. There is very little about the Republican Party today in line with Christian values yet they like to act like they are the ultimate advocate of Christians. Yeah right. The only thing they advocate for is the Goliath corporations and wealthy elite with little regard for “of the People, by the People, and for the People.” Is it not written that its harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven than it is to get a camel through the eye of a needle. I think there’s also a passage where one was pleading his case to the Lord that he had done so many good works in God’s name, and the Lord replied “I never knew you.” I tend to believe that if Jesus were to come back today, you’d much more likely find him with the homeless or unemployed than with a CEO or Republicans that always vote to help the wealthy. Any idiot should know that extending unemployment is saving jobs. It not only helps the struggling in times where jobs are scarce, 6 unemployed per job opening, it provides more consumer spending which helps prevent further job loss. Unemployment is subsistence…not a living by any measure. I’d much rather have a job because I made a lot more money. Just happens the company I worked for went under after 50 years of successful business. Outsourcing sucks by the way. The overwhelming majority of those out of work want a job. There’s idiots out there that think its a matter of handouts for the lazy. Truth be known, corporate America has been the poster child for government handouts, grants, and subsidies (FREE MONEY) for years, not counting recent bailouts. Such hypocrisy. Corporate America is always whining about welfare and entitlements breaking the country and while in truth they’re the ultimate government welfare recipient. God hate a hypocrite by the way. They make a lot of noise complaining about something they are far more guilty of as a calculated distraction.
It’s not been this tough to find a job since the 1930’s…well beyond my lifetime. And let me tell you, its not the Administration in power now that’s the blame. I hope the people don’t let themselves be fooled by the pundits and lobbyists into thinking that somehow we made mistakes voting in 2008 and that we need to change it up in 2010 and 2012. Those arrogant Republican putzes have had 20 of 28 years of chances to show a better way or have some ideas of substance. We kick them out of power after all the years they’ve had it and suddenly they are ingenious and have all the answers on how to fix everything. Yeah right. They cared nothing about partisanship and rammed everything they wanted right down the countries and democrats throat taking no prisoners. Democrats should take a page out of that playbook now. There is no compromise with insanity. It took a long time after a string a bad policies to get in this mess. It’s gonna take more than 9 months to fix it. Maybe the problem was underestimated by current administration. Then maybe there were groups/companies still withholding information on how bad some things really were. The country did not make a mistake last November. The mistake was in 2000 and 2004…actually just 2004 because the presidency was stolen in 2000.

  7. Tim C

Ditto with Raymond T. I was a Navy Brat and served in the Armed Forces for almost 10 years. NOt only did I grow up with suppoort, I’ve always given it during my lifetime. — I just mailed off my last UIB claim form and should be getting my last check by this SAT OCT 10 (if the USPS is still doing their job as well as they have been). I just CANNOT find the words to describe my feelings. I’m throughly dismayed by Congress’s lack of priorities and coordination in this matter. As well as not regarding the basic human needs of food and shelter as a high priority, why should health care and making UIB benifits not being taxed be more important? There seems to be a great concern about all the Government spending without accountability. But with UIB there is immediate accountability. Common sense would dictate that those getting UIB helps stimulate the economy at the local level – they buy food, products and services in THEIR OWN Community as well as paying the associated local and state taxes. As more and more fall out of this much needed and valuable asistance during these rather unique times, it will take more than its associated toll in more ways than anticipated. And I was just beginning to see a crack open in the job market. May GOD Bless and perserve us all (Because Congress, or I should say the Senate sure doesn’t want to at this time)! OH BY WAY , what happened to the solemn pledge by the majority party leaders, saying that they would work 4- 5 days out of the week to get things done (Now they only work Tuesday thru Thursday at most).

  8. Jan J

Everyone write Kyl in AZ tell him how you feel!

    • Ryder

I hate to say this but more letters than naught that we send to politicians are thrown in the circular file. If they read them they would know exactly how millions of us feel and what is happening to us. I have written to everyone of them and those who are not even in my state. No responses….nothing. Not surprised by that at all. Are you?? All they care about is getting their 6 figure paychecks. We need to gather together and do something about that. I am a professional by trade and I can’t even get a job as a maid in a hotel because I am not bilingual. What kind of crap is that?? I’m an American and I shouldn’t have to learn a foreign language to get a job in my home country.

  9. Shane R.

My father always told me that you lie in the bed you make for yourself, hopefully your beds are padded with money, I highly doubt Mr. Kyl, this is going to help come your re-election. Sorry sir, but if you mess with a mans ability to feed his family then you have messed up, bad! Start looking for something to fall back on come your re-election date. There are over 15 million unemployed. I would be willing to bet that any and all of that percent that can vote against you, will. And keep in mind sir, that we did not ask to be laid off, not a single one of us! All 15 million of us were told our jobs were no longer available, so make sure you fluff your pillow and sleep well in the coming days, cuz it’s on dude!

  10. Larry J.

Pushing an additional million or so people into poverty should do wonders for an economy that is beginning to take tentative steps toward recovery.

Just what we need: more foreclosures, evictions, and credit delinquencies.

The human cost: poverty, homelessness, and further suffering on the part of those already tottering on the brink of ruin.

Kyle on the unemployed: “Let them eat cake!”

  11. david t

those fucking assholes, i got layoff a year and half ago, my benefits done, republicans get your assholes
out of your mind and pass the bill/

  12. kris r

I would just like to say i’ve had 1 interview in over a year, my benefits are expired, and these assholes want to take there sweet time, well as far as i’m concerned its MARSHALL LAW TIME!!!!

  13. Neil

Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ), you ahole stop playing damn games and do your job the one the people sent you there to do. Your whole party will suffer for your foolish actions.

Do the right thing and remove your objections and let this bill pass without delay.

I doub’t your butt buddy’s are going to be very happy when there booted out of office in 2010. This action will haunt your party for a long time and you can take that to the bank and the voting booth..

  14. patrick

Senator Kyl- whoever do you think you are? Your goose os cooked!
You should be ashamed of yourself and those backing you (if any). Your constiuents should know how lame and stupid you truly are. Get with the program and realise what your doing. You must know what this holdup is doing to not only 15 million plus unemployed- that’s not counting their families- but the economy as well. These UIB go directly back into circulation for everyday living expenses.

  15. Nostracomas

    GOP = Gaggle Of Piranhas

Let it be known – The sheep will unite to devour the wolves.

The GOP has just lost 36 votes in five states from my family.

Are we sure that the GOP is not a representative of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse? I see a fairly close resemblance in many of their members.

The ‘Bear’ is gone – What’s next, the ‘Eagle’.

They will never feel the pain that many of our people are feeling. Even if they are voted out, after on term they will still be set for life.

  16. Brenda

2013. Can’t wait to vote your dumb-ass out of office! Ditto Raymond T.

  17. John Watson

Politicians know Americans have short memory and forgiveness. I challenge every American to remember these times and these politicians like Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and vote them out of office. In the meantime send emails, phone calls, and regular mail to these bass turds and tell them who they work for. No more, “please help us” we need to say “move your a** mother******, you work for me” Our forefathers didn’t build this nation for us to sit and watch TV while it crumbles.

  18. jamie-mn

That’s it…..i’ve had it. My ui benefits expired amont ago and yesterday the democrats came up with a very good ammendment that finally included all states and tried to bring it up for a quick vote and the republicans objected saying they need more time to study it and possibly offer a rebuttle or more ammendments. I made over $40,000.00 in 07′ and had 401k and great benefits., since then and lost my @ss in what little 401k i had because of lack of oversight and greed. I lost my apt,car and really am trying to get any job. I applied at target for $7.50 an hr so i could eat buy a bus pass shoes and work clothes and then come sleep on my brothers couch, i am ashamed to admit all this, but target said if they hire me it will be only for seasonal, and i said ok. They have not called me back yet. So i am trying(but couldn’t get a highschool girls job)but u wouldn’t believe that their were 4others that had interviews for the same job. One person had to come out of retirement another girl i spoke to in the waiting room said this would be her second job(underpaid at her other) so u wouldn’t believe how many people were desperate for a$7-$8 an hr job. it was almost laughable. This objection from the republicans really took the wind out of my sails. It’s almost bank time(although i don’t want to scare the poor teller lady) and i don’t mean for a deposit!!! This govt. does not work properly, it is way too serious of a matter to be playing partisan games right now. They should’ve taken a few hours or whatever if needed yesterday, and said this bll/ammendment seems logical for the american people, especially since they would be helping the people who most benefit the economy by spending it right back(out of necessity/emergency i might add). My prayers go out to all of you in every state. Hang in there……because i can’t anymore. I’ve emotionally checked out!!

Sen. Jon Kyl, R-AZ objection: Phone No. 1-202-224-4521 (CALL AND KEEP CALLING)

    • Annie M.

Jon Kyl’s mailbox is FULL!!!!! Is this a SURPRISE to anyone???? Keep calling the prick starting on Monday morning!!!!! I agree and empathize with everything that I’ve read……I’m on my last extension here in Michigan and the outlook is eviction, repossesion of car, etc. etc. I cannot even feed myself without food banks and food trucks while getting UE!!!!

  21. REBECCA

wHO DOES HE THINK HE IS ? This is not the way it was suppose to be. They are on a 4 day weekend !!!!!!!
Oh I did not know people stopped eating and living on the weekend . They said to me on the phone they would be in session today.LIAR LIAR
Wow they can go relax in there nice home and feed there children and live in luxury and we pay them for that are we stupid something has got to change.

  22. REBECCA

Oh the car companys got there money ASAP and we are paying for that too.

  23. I RECOMENED ALL TO E-MAIL THE PRESIDENT ON OUR BENEFITS AND WHY THEY ARE NOT EXTENDED YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • My UIB ended in September. I keep submitting resumes and applications everywhere possible with the same closure. It is a very sad time when you can’t feed yourself or our families.

I lost my little (chinq) doggie when he died last Christmas day. I was given another little (chinq) puppy to help fill the emptiness of his death in my family and now its very difficult to be able to feed him also.

This is a pitiful world we live in, when have leave our lives up to Sen. Kyl. to make the decision whether we have the money to feed or to provide for our loved ones.

Please let President Obama do what he was elected to do when he was put in office, to help the people in their time of stress and need. Search your soul and your heart and extend the UIB so we can live again, at least until the economy crunch subsides. Maybe then we can get on track to go back to work and provide for our families, the way we were meant to be able to do.

  24. Dionne

I just emailed that Sen. Kyl. I am so furious right now. Republicans are nothing but obstructionists and don’t care about the American worker. We have done all the right things and now they seem to be throwing us down the toilet. I urge everyone to call, email or write to this jerk. There is strength in numbers.
What are we to do? Camp out in front of the Capital building as we all become homeless? Well that’s going to happen if this keeps up.

  25. Larry J.

Kyl also fought the last extension tooth and nail. He said that the unemployed would pick jobs over unemployment benefits any day. How insightful. We all have been saying that over and over.

Does he think it’s a picnic struggling to make ends meet on a fraction of our former paychecks? Unfortunately, the choice we face is not between jobs and UI benefits. The job maket is close to non-existent.

How do we survive until the happy day that jobs again start to materialize? Nothing could make me happier than to start work tomorrow. Meanwhile, I can’t afford to eat cake.

  26. Ed montalban

Sen kylif you are a human being stop your objections about this unemplyement extention. You must also realize that this is not the proper time to play this kind of game. Shame on you . Get the he’ll of your office.

  27. Sushiboo

Apparently Senator Kyl skipped history in school. There are centuries of examples of people driven to the edge who rise up against their government oppressors and exact justice, fairness and equality in some, ahem, extremely interesting ways. Senator Kyl should count his blessings that the American people will merely vote him out of office for his utterly appalling actions that are completely devoid of any compassion, as well as be very grateful that the American people have higher standards towards others than he does. Power is intoxicating — and obviously Kyl is wallowing in it like a pig in slop. Why wait for the next election to get rid of him? Why doesn’t someone in Arizona start a recall campaign?

Also, how about hammering the hell out of his fellow state senator, McCain, to apply pressure to get this bill passed. I seriously doubt McCain wants to see the political legacy he is so carefully crafting to suffer collateral damage due to Kyl.

Finally, what really irritates me is all our scathing emails, faxes, letters, phone messages to him will most likely only be read or heard by one of his minions. When this is finally over, the bastard should be forced to read and listen to every single one as penance for all the pain and suffering his ego and arrogance is causing so many people.

In the meantime, I agree with the general consensus: fuck Kyl.

  28. Emanon

This is not the 1st time Senator Kyl pulled this stunt. There is an article from USA Today (6/17/08), reporting that the House passed a bill extending unemployment benefit. Senator Harry Reid tried to get the bill passed in the Senate, but guess who objected? If you guessed Senator Jon Kyl, you are right.

Do a Google search “gop objects to unemployment extension 2008 usatoday.com” You will find this article.

  29. George C

    Senator Kyl,
For your sake, I hope you do not plan to run again for the senate, or for that matter, any public office. I will very actively be doing everything in my power to make sure that you do not get elected.

  30. Sushiboo

I find it hilarious that the Republicans are posting objections to every post. I had no idea. I happened to hit “Comments” at the top of the site and stumbled on to this. Sometimes I have to admit I am not as Internet savvy as I’d like to be, but I digress:

George C, I just got an email about your post, I imagine they will be objecting to it soon.

    • Dionne

I don’t care. Americans need to start doing what people in other countries do. If their government does/enacts something they don’t want they will automatically take to the streets and march on government. Their governments are scared of the people not the people scared of the government, as it should be here in the U.S. They are suppose to be working for us, not against us.

  31. Emanon

What is really sad is that the Amendment (3548) is less than 6 pages long. Senator Kyl could not read less than 6 pages in 1 hour. When Senators Dick Durbin & Sherrod Brown talked about other bills from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on 10/08/09, Senator Kyl could have read the Amendment or have someone read it to him. He chose to inflict his stupidity on those in need of unemployment benefits.

For those who want to read the text of the Amendment (3548), go to Thomas.loc.gov.

  32. Robert

It appears Sen. Kyl does not fear the unemployed arms can reach him but God’s arm reaches out even to the depths of Hell!

    Words of Fire…

  33. Larry J.

E-mail or call every news agency possible to make sure that they give Sen. Kyl due credit for his contempt toward those who cannot find work.

  34. Robyn t

All i can say is that i am sick! I have e-mailed local congress, and local senate here in Nevada, everyone has responded with high hopes for the bill being passed today, that includes the people who work @ unemployment (which local government had contact me with information surprise surprise) Well hell it all went down the toilet quickly with one asshole didn’t it ? I read each and every one of your posts, i agree with everyone on all counts. I am actually a very intelligent person, but i don’t have one intelligent thought left, as i am now to tired to hear any more bullshit. All i can say now is that i wish i could drive to Arizona and take everything that this piece of shit owns away from him and his family, dump them deep in the desert where he can’t reach anyone for help, then tell him to try and survive!
Then when he begs for help tell him tough shit, he needs to know what hundreds of thousand of HARD WORKING AMERICANS HAVE HAD TO LIVE WITHOUT FOR WAY TO LONG. kARMA IS A MOTHER FUCKER SENATOR!!!!!!!!!

  35. Emanon

    More Senator Kyl stupidity:

When the Senate Finance Committee was working on the Health Care Reform bill on 9/25/09, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) wanted health insurance companies to provide basic maternity care benefits in their insurance policies. Right now, some states do not require this benefit in the health insurance policies.

Senator Kyl proposed an Amendment to eliminate coverage for maternity care. He said: “I don’t need maternity care.”

Senator Stabenow responded: “I think your mom probably did.”

On 10/8/09, a group of Arizona mothers protested outside the Arizona office of Senator Kyl.

Senator Kly has shown he does not represent the unemployed or people having children.

    • Sushiboo

That’s assuming he had a mother and didn’t just crawl out from under a rock.

If he does have a mother, as a mother, I know I would be deeply ashamed to call him my son.

  36. nana r

doubt any one of you have had your jobs taken away from you as I did after 18 years but its no fun. I played by all the rules and paid my taxes and bought a home, raised a family and saved money for the future. Well I lost my income and lost all of my savings and yes my 401K tanked too. I am not looking for a handout just some help so I can find a job before . Please pass this benefit extension peoples lives are in your hands, don’t you think if there were jobs we would have one.

  37. Kevin

What a bunch of bullshit. The economy is failing. Well correction. Failed. American’s have already lost a record number of mortgages, personal finances, and a few in the senate want to drag their feet on this issue.

Most state’s extended unemployment insurance benefits ran out the 3rd week of Sept. They want to pass a bill by the end of the year. By that time, thanksgiving and christmas will have passed, I should be behind on all my bills further than I already am. Fuckin Awesome!

The amount of funding needed for this bill is small in comparsion to most measures already passed for the economy. Anyone who voted to stall this bill should be ashamed of themselves.

I will contact every news agency, and the president if I have to. So I can remind everyone what a bunch of crap this is.

Democracy has failed. Capitalism has failed. We’re no better than a 3rd world country at this point. Eventually the people in this country will have had enough. Next step Anarchy.

  38. impissed

Does any1 have any idea whats going 2 happen next???I’m already homeless,me and my son.My benefits ran out the last week of AUG..I lost everything. What do you guys think will happen next?Do you think it will be along time? Please give me your oppinion.I know no1 really knows but I know you know and hear more than I do,like I said I’m homeless.I check in the library every now and then 2 hopefully hear that the bill was passed. Its just terrible.I’m trying not 2 give up,but I cant I have my son……………

  39. John Watson

I can’t believe Jon Kyl would do this? I live in Cali, but he has to have fucked someone in AZ out of benefits and don’t they carry guns legally in AZ? I would not be shocked if crime reflects more of common man’s desperation like the car chase on CNN where that guy in Dallas didn’t pay for gas. I think our congress and senators better start worrying about repraisals. There are crazy angry armed citizens mad as he’ll and they’re not going to take it anymore.

  40. Emanon

Information for NY residents: In the NYS Department of Labor’s facebook page, someone asked if the unemployment benefit payments will be retroactive. This is what the NYS Department of Labor’s representative said in response:

“There would not be retro payments but rather the benefits would kick in the week after its passed and signed. If it passes next week the first week of payments begin on 10/25 and end 20 weeks after that.”

  41. Kevin

Yep Emanon, that is how extensions always work. After it’s signed they’ll mail notice, then you can claim that week.

  42. Skeeter O'Leary

I lost my job at age 58 and for the first time in my life filed for unemployment. I’ve never before had a problem finding a job here in FL. But I am now 60 and still desperately seeking a job to keep my head above water but no luck. I’m not a socialist nor do I support many of the Dems socialist welfare programs but UC is for people that have worked for a living and not been on welfare. The GOP needs to quit bickering and help us Americans in dire need to pay our bills and feed our families.

  43. Anon JAD

After you email your own Senators, as well as Kyl in AZ to tell him how you feel, you should also tell Kyl that you’ll do whatever you can, from wherever you are, to help defeat him in his next election.

You don’t have to be from AZ to feel the effect his egotistical cynicism, hurting everyone in the country for his own ends – and you don’t have to be from AZ to affect HIM in HIS next election either!

Use your cell to help phone bank for Kyl’s opposition, and donate whatever you can to whomever opposes him!

He stinks!! And apparently, he has the support of a very misguided GOP too.

  44. Naji

9 percent approval rating for the Republican congress is way to much for these lazy no good for nothing looser. I hate all the republican politician, we need to finish the job and boot the rest of them out of Congress.

  45. Jaron Talotta

These Republican assholes (Kyl in particular) are the reason the rich will always be rich and the poor will always be poor. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have an uprising happen that would be compared to the French Revolution.

  46. I am a voter. I will never support the Republican Party for what they have done to the American unemployed, for not extending their Benefits. The republican Senate BE DAMED! You will pay dearley!

  47. Mark

What I do not understand in any of this is how did a peice of work such as Sen. Kyl ever get the votes to be elected in the first place? I mean did every decent and moral arizonian stay home and just let the millionaires vote? I am from NY state and while we are well known for having the most dysfunctional state government in the country our democratic senators fully supported this bill, we need to place the blame squarely where it belongs , on the folks in Arizona who put this out of touch, obnoxious, self serving scumbag in office.

  48. Sushiboo

Hey! Mark! I take strong issue with you about your post — we in California have the most dysfunctional government — trust me on this one. We’ve nailed this “honor” thanks to Arnold. It’s one time NY should be happy not to be in first place.

As for Kyl, I’ve finally reached the point where words fail me.

  49. kim

what is legislation doing to help the america people that are hurting. they need to vote on the unemployment extension as of october13, 2009. every person that work has paid into unemployment. Now it is time that they need the funds to take care of their family. Wake up REPUBLICAN your day is coming on election day.

  50. Mark

I just read a peice in the Albany examiner that quotes Sen. Reid as saying that if the bill to extend unemployment benefits does not pass by unaminous consent (meaning Sen. Kyl dropping his objection) he does not think that he will be able to find the “floor time” to reintroduce the bill and it would be more likely that a bill would be signed by Thanksgiving, this article was dated 10/12/09, is anyone seething.

  51. Emanon

I just spoke with Senator Harry Reid’s office to see when will the bill be voted on. Senator Reid’s office said they don’t know since Senator Kyl blocked the vote. Senator Reid’s office suggested that we call Senator Kyl’s office & Senator Mitch McConnell’s office (who is the Republican Senate Leader).

    Contact Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
    Office No. (202) 224-4521
    website: kyl.senate.gov/contact.cfm

Contact Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) – Office No. (202) 224-2541
    website: mcconnell.senate.gov/contact_form.cfm

Please contact Senators Kyl, McConnell & the other Republican Senators to voice your support for the bill extending unemployment benefits. Otherwise, they will continue to block the bill from being voted & passed.

  52. Emanon

This morning, I spoke with Senator Kyl’s office. I asked his staff member why did Senator Kyl blocked the vote? His staff said Senator Kyl did not have time to read it. I told his staff the bill is less than 6 pages. Has he read it yet? No response from his staff member to this question.

Kyl’s staff member said they were waiting for CBO to score the bill. I told him CBO already scored the bill on 10/8/09, and CBO said the bill will net a $200 Million Dollar Surplus.

Kyl’s staff member said Senator Kyl has always supported bills extending unemployment. I called his staff member a LIAR. According to the Senate’s own records, Senator Kyl voted against bills extending unemployment in June 2008 and February 2009. In fact, Kyl was the one who blocked the bill extending unemployment from being voted on in June 2008 (a year ago).

Please call Senator Kyl to get him to drop his objection to the bill being voted & passed. Senator Kyl’s office number is (202) 224-4521.

Please also call Senator Mitch McConnell too. He is the Republic Senate Leader. His office number is (202) 224-2541.

  53. Jhardcastle

I was born and raised on the westside of Chicago been a democate all my life and proud of it. The republicans have been in favor of the rich all of my 63 years and my parents. We have never had the mess we are in since Hover GOP was in office FDR got us out if that. Sometimes the two party system is GOP dragging us down. I am unemployed too and sure no one is rushing out to hire me with 42 yrs experience. I am back to min wage.

    • Jaron Talotta

There has always been two types of people in this country. The “haves” and the “have nots”. The “haves” have always shit on the “have nots” Which that son of a bitch Kyl is doing.

  54. Sushiboo

The bastard didn’t have time to read six pages?

    • Emanon

That’s right. I called Senator Kyl’s office less than 1/2 hour ago to see if he has read the bill yet. His aide still would not answer that question.

For a copy of the Amendment (3548):

      go to thomas.loc.gov

      Click Congressional Record

In the Enter Search Box, type in 3548

Scroll down to Enter Date in format box, type in from 10/08/2009 to 10/08/2009

Scoll down to Sort Result by Date box, click “Yes”

      Click Search

Go to Text of Amendment – Senate Oct. 8, 2009

      Click Page S10324

You should ge Amendment 3548. That is the bill Senator Kyl was unable to read from last Thursday afternoon until today.

  55. Sushiboo

This just adds one more drop to the never-ending Chinese water torture of being unemployed. In addition to worrying about assholes like Kyl, trying getting personal insurance when your COBRA runs out (which by the way I did not qualify for government assistance because I got let a month before the arbitrary 9/1 date). That’s another wonderful circus of getting screwed without being kissed. You don’t realize what garden of unexpected thorns that one is until you have to start dealing with it. I knew it would be bad, but not nearly as bad as I am discovering.

BTW, Emanon thank you for your hard work and efforts, as well as keeping us informed of what you learn. You can bet I’m bitching loud and clear and often to the powers that be. Thanks again.

  56. Jhardcastle

How about a IQ test before anybody can run for office. The GOP does not want to read the amendment because it’s not their idea. The Dem. can out vote them and all they do is act like sore losers.

  57. Sushiboo

No kidding. And at the EDD. I sent them an email because I had to notify them of my intent to obtaining training (the process — just to qualify for, not actually receive training — I’m guessing should be completed right around the turn of the next century) and you should read the gobbledygook they sent as a response. It contradicts itself from one paragraph to another. It’s almost as bad as the last one from them where I inquired about missing the first extension because my benefits don’t run out in time to qualify. That one was completely undecipherable. Honestly a gorilla with opposable thumbs would be able to keyboard a more intelligent response.

  58. I just wonder why Senator Jon Kyl, and Senator Mitch McConnell is still blocking the UIB extension. I am not in politics, I’m an ordinary american citizen who feels this is so very wrong. I care for my mankind and always thought that Senators and the Congress along with the President was suppose to help the american people, after all if there weren’t for people they would not have jobs either. I believe the President is doing what he can, but why is it always a war of the parties? Maybe the sentors and congress have forgotten what its like not having anything to fall back on when you’re down and out. Or just maybe they’ve never had to experience such a feeling… if so, I’m happy for them… you should feel priviledged that you don’t have to feel helpness and useless and unable to feed your family or pay rent payment to keep from being homeless!!! That how you feel when you can’t provide for your families needs. You should open your hearts and think about what you are doing to the american people, and extend the unemployment benefits so people can try to build thier lives back. I wonder if you really care about the people who put you where you are.

Think About for awhile. Open your mind and hearts to do the right thing for mankind.

  59. Emanon

Around 2:20 p.m (E.S.T.) today, C-SPAN2 showed Senator Harry Reid on the Senate floor. He moved to have 3548 be unblocked & placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. Senator Jim Webb was the presiding Senate President, and he said 3548 will be placed on the Senate calendar, but he did not say when.

C-SPAN2 said there will be a debate & vote tonight at 5:30 p.m., but I don’t know if 3548 will be included.

I just called Senator Reid’s office to see if they will vote on the bill tonight. Senator Reid’s office said there is still no agreement with the Republicans, so it does not look like the bill will be voted on tonight.

PLEASE KEEP CALLING SENATORS McCONNELL, KYL & OTHER REPUBLICAN SENATORS.

If you do not call them, they will think they can drag this out as long as they can.

  60. Jhardcastle

The proverb in the bible said it all. A rich man has as much chance of going to heaven as a camel going through the eye of a needle. Every politican that leaves office is richer then when they come in. Find me one that left broke? I will call you a liar.

  61. Jhardcastle

I called Kyl’s office it’s after 5 on the east coast so they are gone. Home to Georgetown to a Mil+ home. I did leave him a piece of my mind anyway.

  62. Christine

Hello from Massachusetts. I am waiting around with all of you and praying that this unemployment extension is passed asap. It is getting cold here and we need help immediately.

  63. Donna

Senator Kyl is a worthless piece of shit!! There is no excuse for this arrogance. I hope the people of Arizona are paying attention to his actions and vote his SORRY ASS OUT OF OFFICE!!

I feel the same way about Senate Majority Leader McConnell. I’m from Kentucky, and I still can’t tell you one positive thing he has done for this state! I have never voted for him nor will I ever, or for any other republican. They are all alike when it comes to helping people out in times of despair and situations like this. It is all about them and not about the people they are supposed to be representing.

I was taught by a very wise woman and man, my parents; “any person that HAS to work for a living won’t vote for a republican IF they have any sense.” The republicans do not represent the working class people of this country, and they never will. They only represent themselves and their rich special interests that help keep them in office. I’m sick of all of them and I make it my business to vote in every election, I will only vote Democrat or Independent, and I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A SORRY ASSED REPUBLICAN!! They say past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior. Need I say more?

    • Jhardcastle

I also come from hardworking parents. My mother was self-employed. There is no benefits to that. My dad went to college on the GI bill after worldwar II I worked my way through college working nights in an ER on Chicago’s westside. They would be very upset I need unemployment even tho they lived through the great depression. It’s not easy for any of us.

  64. Dionne

Someone posted this at another website.
    http://washingtonindependent.com/63677/gop-blocks-extension-of-unemployment-insurance-again

I hope this is not true. If it is. We should all overflood their emails, phones and march right down there to their offices!!! This is madness!!! I have $5 left to my name. I have a 4 year old child. Little food left to feed him. It’s getting cold and he’s outgrown his winter coat and boots. I’m going to apply for food stamps tomorrow. Had to turn down an interview because I have no money left to get there for mass transit. No money until next week friday and that is going toward rent payment. WHAT ARE WE TO DO!!!?!!!

    • Emanon

According to the Republican Senators: “Let them eat cake!”

      • Emanon

Dionne: I’m sorry about my earlier post. I misread your post. I didn’t mean to be cold to you.

There has to be a food pantry by you. If you can’t find one, go to your nearest Catholic church – – even if you are not Catholic. Go to the Rectory or to the Parish Social Ministry of your local Catholic church. They should be able to direct you to a food pantry & to a place to get winter coats & clothing for yourself & son.

My local Catholic church has a food pantry. We do a winter coat drive and a winter clothing drive every year. Also, my church will do a special drive for someone in need. This summer, we collected money for a child who needed dialysis, but his family’s health insurance would not pay for it.

Also, look into any government programs in your home state to help you pay your heating or utility bills.

My prayers are with you and your son.

  65. Sushiboo

Unfortunately Jhardcastle, Kyl would need far more than just a piece of your mind to be remotely close to being considered a sentient being. And that’s just sentient, not even necessarily with measurable IQ. I’m not sure if they have even thought of or tried empathy and compassion transplants yet but if ever there was a case where one was needed (notice I did not say human being) it is this bastard; I don’t know how he can sleep at night.

    • Jhardcastle

All I can tell you is that a lot of pieces make a pie. If we all call and tell him a piece of our minds it can’t hurt us. Some fool on the other end had to hear the stack of calls.

      • Sushiboo

My point was he is a stupid asshole, venting a little I guess. I’m not disagreeing with you whatsoever. I keep writing and calling. However, when all is said and done, despite the fools hearing the calls, I think he should be required to listen to every single voice message, read every single letter, fax and email. That should keep him busy an off the Senate floor for quite a while.

  66. Emanon

The Senate adjourned this evening without voting on the bill. They will return tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was one of many Republican Senators I called today. His office said he will vote in favor of the bill. I implored Senator Graham’s to help broker a deal & to bring Senators Kyl & McConnell to their senses.

Senator Harry Reid’s office is trying to get the bill passed by unanimous consent to cut through the red tape, but the Republican Senators refuse to agree.

Please keep calling, faxing or e-mailing the Republican Senators to get them to vote for this bill & to support unanimous consent. Otherwise, people will not be able to pay their bills this month or the months thereafter.

Also, Senator Kyl is putting his own spin on what transpired on Thursday, October 8, 2009. Senator Kyl’s staff told me some BS story, blaming the Democrats for the bill not being voted on. I told Senator Kyl’s aide that I watched the entire events unfold on CSPAN on Thursday, so should I believe him or my lying eyes and ears?

I urge everyone to watch CSPAN, so you will know what is happening.

  67. Sushiboo

This may not be the most appropriate place to post this bit of info but if it can help someone . . .

First: I’m in CA. My COBRA is going to run out soon, benefits as well. I was looking into individual insurance. Despite being guaranteed insurance because I’ve had no lapse in coverage, because I have been on an antidepressant (gee, golly, whiz, I can’t imagine why) I will be turned down for a individual policy. Apparently, if you have taken any kind of antidepressant you have to wait 12 months without taking any before they will consider you. I was told many this is the case in many states. If you’ve kept COBRA, i.e., could afford it, the only thing available to you is a “portability plan.” I’ve yet to find out what it covers or how much it costs because when I hit this brick wall, just one of many and I’m sure you all know exactly what I mean, I simply couldn’t deal with it any further today. Especially after this one person who sounded like a 12 year old simply could not comprehend what I was saying to her about my insurance problems said “It’s raining in CA isn’t it? Well, consider the rain is washing everything clean and you will . . . .” at that point I stopped listening to Pollyanna because I knew I would go through the phone at her.

I realize many, many, many of us are not in a place to even worry about COBRA because they are barely existing on a day-to-day basis and would consider themselves lucky if that was their biggest problem right now, but for those of us that aren’t as far as long in the process, I thought I’d save them a lot of time. Filling out individual insurance forms is complete torture (I started one) and if I save one person that and from hitting the wall when they find out they are uninsurable, I’ll feel my experience had some reason to it.

And, to all of you who are suffering more than I am now, trust me, I do not take your situation lightly and know that for right now, I am just lucky. But, when my benefits run out, as it stands now, I’m shit out of luck and my 85 year old mother lives with me, so it could turn ugly really fast. My heart goes to anyone suffering because of this asshole Kyl.

    Sorry for the long post.

  68. Sushiboo

As Bill Cosby used to say in certain stand-up routines: riiiiiiiiiiiight. Oh yeah, it was the Democrats . . . sure and Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are real.

  69. Sushiboo

I just re-read my post and I apologize. While my intent was well-intentioned and honorable, it probably seemed very obnoxious to people who are in utterly dire circumstances. My only “defense” if there is one, is that I am new to the daily indignities that befall the unemployed the longer they are unemployed. So if I offended anyone, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.

  70. Emanon

Here is a list of Republic Senators whose term expires on January 3, 2011. They will be running for re-election in 2010.

    Robert Bennett (R-UT) – 6%
Sam Brownback (R-KS) – not seeking re-election. Going to run for Governor of Kansas – 7.1%
    Richard Burr (R-NC) – 10.8%
    Tom Coburn (R-OK) – 6.8%
    Mike Crapo (R-ID) – 8.9%
    Jim DeMint (R-SC) – 11.5%
    Chuck Grassley (R-IA) – 8.9%
    Judd Gregg (R-NH) – 6.9%
    Johnny Isakson (R-GA) – 10.2%
    George LeMieux (R-FL) – 10.7%
    John McCain (R-AZ) – 9.1%
    Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) – 7.1%
    Richard Shelby (R-AL) – 10.4%
    John Thune (R-SD) – 4.9%
    David Vitter (R-LA) – 7.8%

The percentage next to their names is the rate of unemployment in that Senator’s state for August 2009.

I meant to say Republican Senators not Republic.

Someone posted this article on another website. Please read this article on what happened on the Senate floor this evening.

This morning, I sent e-mails to all 40 Republican Senators for them to drop their objection to 3548 from being voted & passed by unanimous consent.

It is very easy to send them e-mails & it is free. Go to http://www.senate.gov. Click Senators (on top of page). You will get a list of Senators with their office address, telephone number, and e-mail address. If you click their e-mail address, it will bring you directly to that Senator’s e-mail page. Fill out the form. You can leave a message of up to 10,000 characters. You have to fill out separate forms for each Senator.

Leaving messages for the Senators here will not help, since it won’t be read by them or their staff. You have to leave messages for them at their Senate offices.

If you want this bill to pass, you have to voice your support for the bill by calling, faxing, and/or e-mailing the Republican Senators. They are the ones who are blocking this bill from being voted & passed.

If you chose to do nothing to voice your support for the bill & if the bill does not pass, do not complain. Let your voices be heard now.

Also, Senator Orrin Hatch’s office is lying to anyone who calls about what happened last night on the Senate floor. He denied blocking the bill from being voted. We saw it happen on C-SPAN2 last night. So, his office is telling us not to believe our own eyes and ears.

  74. Jhardcastle

Ok, I am a military widow. My husband was in the Air Force for 26 yrs. When I had to quit my job to travel with him I was never eligible for Unemp benefits. I never applied I have had to learn hard lessons so we could serve this country. If you are out of benefits. Go on line and find Health & Human services for the state you are in. Apply for FOOD STAMPS. Now 1# you can’t eat pride. If you have children you may be elig. for Chips porgrams for childrens health insurance. The food stamp program is underused. At last count only 51% of elig people apply. Apply for every program you can and get your reciepts together. YES THERE IS RED TAPE. But it’s nice to be able to take your children to the doctor and not pay. If you are low income the children may even get Medicaid and get dental. We have all worked to pay for these benefits and now we need them. Without the Dem. we would not have these availalbe. Your kids don’t care where the money comes from for them to help bring in the groceries. The are also help programs for utlities. You can be paying a mortgate you can own a car. There are car values that apply for you to get assistance but get out there and apply.

  75. Jhardcastle

Ok, I am a military widow. When I had to quit a job and move with my husband I was never elig for unemp benefits. I have learned may bitter lessons. 1# you can not eat pride. Even if you have income the CHps programs is health insurance for children. Get out there any apply on line at health & human services for your state. The dem pasts these programs and we paid for them now we need them. You can also get utliity help.

  76. Jhardcastle

Thanks to these bastards I’m living in my car now. It’s never been so crystal clear to me now that the Republicans are truly the corrupt criminals. I’m so angry and pissed I have nothing but unspeakable thoughts running through my mind!

For those of you who did not see Senator Orrin Hatch object to 3548 being voted & passed by unanimous consent yesterday:

Ms. STABENOW. Madam President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate proceed to the immediate consideration of H.R. 3548 , which was received from the House; further, that a Reid substitute amendment, which is at the desk, be agreed to; the bill, as amended, be read a third time and passed; the motions to reconsider be laid upon the table with no intervening action or debate; and any statements related to the bill be printed in the Record.

The PRESIDING OFFICER. Is there objection?

Mr. HATCH. Madam President, I have to object on behalf of our side.

The PRESIDING OFFICER. Objection is heard.

The Senator from Utah is recognized.

I contacted both of my Senators and told them they are fostering a welfare state by not voting for the ext. This is the time of the year that businesses make must of their yearly income. Without extentions more bussinesses will go out of business. Duh.

I contacted both of my Senators and told them they are fostering a welfare state by not voting for the ext. This is the time of the year that businesses make most of their yearly income. Without extentions more bussinesses will go out of business. Duh.

  81. Sushiboo

Thats it? No question as to why? It’s just
“I have to object on behalf of our side” and the matter is just dropped? They don’t even say where it goes from there? They just go on to recognize the next senator? This is unfathomable. I find it almost an impossible time wrapping brain around this — in fact I can’t.

  82. Sushiboo

I think the fact that my last sentence is so incoherent just underscores the point I assume you all know I was trying to make.

  83. Dionne

Emanon apology accepted but I’m sure that’s how the senators feel about us. Heck, the $5 is not enough to cover the cost of a cake anyway.
I’m crying my eyes out right now. Thank you for your suggestions and I will look into them.

  84. Donna

My employment ran out in september Thanks Republicans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER VOTE REPUBLICAN AGAIN NO MATTER WHAT .
And I have alway voted republican

  85. Emanon

The number of excuses the Republican Senators come up with is mind-boggling.

First, they said they didn’t have time to read the 6-page bill.

When you call Senators Kyl & Hatch’s offices, they claim they did not block the vote. We watched them do it on C-SPAN2. There are written transcripts of them blocking the vote for those who did not watch it.

Senators Kyl, Hatch & McConnell said they will vote for the bill if it is brought up for a vote. The bill was offered up for a vote on twice (on 10/8 & 10/13). On both times, the Republican Senators objected & blocked the vote.

They also have to nerve to say blame Senator Reid because it is his job to schedule the bill for a vote. If Senator Reid had this bill scheduled for a vote every single day, the Republican Senators would block the vote every single day.

McConnell’s office said this afternoon that the bill is not finished. How is the bill not finished? Tier 2 gets 14 weeks. Tier 3 gets 14 weeks. Tier 4 gets 6 weeks on top of Tier 3. What more is there to do to this bill except to vote on it? If the Republican Senators think the bill is not finished, then how come they have not proposed any amendments to this bill? How come they have not told anyone what they think is missing from the bill?

If they have a problem with the bill, they should stand up like an adult and explain their objectionl, so the problem can be discussed & resolved.

These Republican Senators are playing games with the lives of many Americans. I hope every family who is adversely affected by these Republican Senators remember them & the Republican Party on election day.

  86. Sushiboo

In the immortal words of a mental giant: “You Betcha!!!” — Sarah Palin.

While I hate to step on a great line, I want to be clear, am not making light of this situation, I am being sarcastically dead serious.

Since most of the Republicans preach about family values and court the religious right, I’m sure they must be familiar with the phrase, you reap what you sow. Apparently they are having a collective brain fart.

  87. Emanon

Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) just said on the Joy Behar Show that the most effective way to lobby Congress is to call and write letters. He said marches do absolutely nothing to get Congress’ attention.

Please keep calling & sending faxes and e-mails to the Republican Senators to get them to drop their objection to this bill being passed by unanimous consent.

  88. Emanon

The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the 1st time for the week ending 10/3/09 was 514,000.

The number of people continuing to claim unemployment benefits for the week ending 10/3/09 was 5,992,000 Million. The week before was 6,067,000 Million people. So, for the week ending 10/3/09, 75,000 people either found jobs (unlikely) or exhausted their benefits (most likely).

  90. Emanon

Called McConnell today – His office said McConnell won’t know if he will support the bill until he reads it. Read it? The bill is less than 6 pages & he had the bill for over a week. Everyone in the country has read it. Why hasn’t he?

Called Kyl’s office – He wants to add his own amendment, but he won’t tell anyone what the amendment is until the bill is brought to the floor again.

Called Hatch’s office – No live person. Recording say leave a message. Yeah, so they can delete it without listening to it.

Keep calling, faxing & e-mailing the Republican Senators. If we don’t keep the pressure on them, they will think we longer care about bill extending unemployment benefits.

On CSPAN2 this a.m. – Kyl said “Let’s listen to the American people to see what they want . . . .” (concerning the health care bill). He and the other Republican Senators can’t even hear what the American People want regarding the bill extending unemployment benefits. We wanted this bill voted & passed weeks ago!

  91. Emanon

I called Senator Coburn’s Office (R-OK) – His office say the Republicans want Stimulus money to pay for the bill extending unemployment benefit, so they are holding up the bill. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said the bill will net a $200 Million Dollar surplus the way it is currently written.

Coburn’s office said they will vote on the bill in the next 5 to 10 days. Those who have exhausted their unemployment benefits cannot wait another 5 to 10 days.

Please keep calling all Republican Senators to voice your support for this bill. If you do not call, they will think we do not want this bill to pass. If you do not write or call the Republican Seantors, do not complain if this bill is not passed.

  92. Sushiboo

Emanon, once again, thank you for all your efforts. I’ll call again, but the last time I called Feinstein’s office I got someone who sounded like a 12 year old and had no idea what I was talking about. I tried to get some information and realized I was talking to a blank wall and decided trying to pursue it would be a waste of long distance charges. I asked him specifically to pass on my concerns and he said he would but frankly, I doubt it. Nevertheless, I’ll keep trying all of them.

I tried to see this morning if I could contact The Daily Show and get Jon Stewart riled up on this — he seems to have good ability to get attention for issues, especially involving the stupidity of our government and get the issues before a huge number of people. Unfortunately as of yet I haven’t found a way to contact them. I can’t but believe if Stewart, with his huge following, started slamming the Republicans on national television for dragging their feet on this that they would perhaps start to pay attention. Every night I watch the local and national news and nobody gives this story any play. If they do, the walk around the edges and don’t mention the stalled bill. Somehow we need to get media coverage specifically saying how the bill is stalled, not just “gee a lot of people are out of work” puff pieces that maybe also touch on how it is going to affect holiday shopping. What holiday shopping? I’m not doing any. We need to single out the advocates on the different stations and place our case in front of them, not just write the station. This in addition to hounding our representatives and senators. Oh, and I’ve written Pelosi too, add her to your list.

  93. Emanon

Everyone: Please watch C-SPAN2 now. Senator Jeanne Sheehan talked about voting on this bill. They have called a quorum (for Senators to return to the Senate floor). Maybe, they will vote on it. Let’s see what other excuses or objections the Republican Senators come up with.

    • Jaron Talotta

Is C-SPAN2 part of the cable network?

      • Emanon

I don’t know if it’s part of cable, but it should be free. It’s channel 79 in certain parts of NY.

      • Jhardcastle

Where are you and what do you do for a living. I am worried you are in the north and winter is coming. It’s the mother in me. If you can get to NE Texas I may be able to get you some work and room and board. I have never done this but times are hard.

  94. Emanon

Senator Debbie Stabenow talking about the unemployment bill now on CSPAN2.

  95. Emanon

Senator Stabenow (D-Michigan) demanded a vote on the unemployment bill NOW. She blasted Republican Senators for their stall tactics.

  96. Jhardcastle

I emailed McConnell and told him if he didn’t have time to read the bill, hire me I can read. Between healthcare and unemployment I think the GOP is trying it’s best to bring us to our knees. Maybe the plan is no money no insurance we will all die off.

  97. Jhardcastle

I would love to watch C-Span but my directv is out and all I get is local from the rabbit ears. Can’t afford directv now.

  98. Emanon

Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) said he will vote No on the bill. He said we cannot afford to pay for it. His state (Indiana) has 9.9% unemployment.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said this bill (as currently written) will have a $200 Million Dollar surplus.

Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) said he will vote No on the bill, but he won’t say why not. His state (Alabama) has 10.4% unemployment.

  99. Sushiboo

I’ve been gone — has the vote already taken place?

  100. Emanon

No. They are debating and voting on other bills. No more mention of 3548. :(

  101. Emanon

The Senate is adjourned to Monday, October 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. No vote on this bill (3548). Great – Another week without money.

  102. Emanon

Someone on another website said you can watch CSPAN via in the internet. This is the website they gave http://cspan.org/Watch/C-SPAN_wm.aspx

I don’t know if it works, but for those without CSPAN access, it is worth a try. However, nothing will happen tomorrow since the Senate won’t be back until Monday, October 19, 2009.

  103. Emanon

I read this article which explains the tax that the Republican Senators are objecting to. Here is the cite to it:

    http://progressillinois.com/2009/10/14/gop-temporarily-blocks-ui

The tax that the Republican Senators are complaining about has been around for the past 30 years. The Democrats want to extend it for another 18 months.

It is a tax which businesses have to pay. It costs each business $14 per employee for the entire year. If you break it down, it is $1.17 per month or less than 4 cents a day for each employee for the entire year.

So, these Republican Senators are blocking the bill extending unemployment benefits over less than 4 cents a day for each employee.

These Republican Senators from the south are supposed to be so religious. Yet, they forget that the bible says: Whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do to me. Matthew 25:40

  104. Jhardcastle

Here we go again. They show up in church to look like they are religious. They are there to make connections and shake hands. I will give the Kennedy’s credit. They attend mass daliy in small churches I have seen that all my adult life. They go for fear of God not their jobs. Bible belt where I live are all two faced Sad but true. They can quote the bible but do not live it.

  105. Sushiboo

For what it is worth: I tried calling The Daily Show directly in NY. All I could get was the ticket message line (I left a message nonetheless) and when given an option for the operator but was consistently cut off and reached no one. I then called Comedy Central, I had to leave a message, but marked it urgent. I told them I tried to reach TDS to get Jon Stewart to jump on this issue because the coverage the regular networks were giving this issue was totally lacking and ineffective. I told them some of the basic facts and said I honestly believed if he addressed the issue it would help. Let’s face it, Stewart has national clout and Republicans really don’t like to be make to look like asses in public, especially on his show because he will go for the jugular. I made a point to stress the bill was only six pages, I think that could resonate with Stewart based on watching him for so long.

Some of you may disagree with me, but I figured there was potential there and it couldn’t hurt. Nothing may ever come of it but at least I tried yet another way to get something done because all the calling, faxing, writing and emailing needs some help; the couple of bucks it cost me in long distance fees was worth the gamble.

    • Jaron Talotta

I don’t disagree with you and it was a good gamble to try but I would bet all my money (which is very little because of our situation) that by judging by the actions of these assholes, they probably don’t even bother or care to read their email or listen to their voice messages because they know what to expect.

I know this would never happen but we desperately need to have a united one party government instead this us vs. them type of government. But then again we might end up with a one group of idiots instead of two.

  106. Jhardcastle

Yeah, I called Kyl’s office and I’m in Texas. Do whatever you can. CNN is showing Sarah Palin is coming to Texas. GOP Gov. 2 Senators. I am surrounded by snakes. Then I have a Viet Nam vet that is on disablity “mental” believe me. He posts signs in the front of his shack. All againest Obama and the dem’s. A real nut. He lives in the woods. I drive out of my way to avoid his place. Today I could make him disappear.

  107. Sushiboo

I got a flyer in the mail from my congressman. I had no idea if he was a R or D, (turns out he’s an R) but I decided to call his office in DC anyway. I figured even though he wasn’t a senator, what the hell. I actually got a young staffer who paid attention to me. SHOCK. I told him the situation, that the house had passed, etc. I also told him to read all the message boards because if some of the people started acting on what they were suggesting, things could get really ugly, really fast. (I also made this point in my msg to Comedy Central.) Bless this kid’s heart he was actually going on to the senate page as he talked to me. I think he might actually talk to someone.

I read on another board that those assholes had voted themselves a raise last week. If true, I wish I’d had had that info to leave in my msg to CC this morning. The absolute gall.

Sarah Palin? It’s bad enough to deal with assholes, let alone someone with the IQ of a dying house plant. Texas, for what? And, I saw Levi “what’s his name that got her daughter pregnant” on a TV commercial for, are you ready, condoms.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve dropped into an alternative universe.

    • Jhardcastle

I think if you see the commerical again it’s for “nuts”. Not condoms. I thought it was a perfect place for anyone that knocked up one of the nuts in the Palin family tree.

  108. Jaron Talotta

At least there is one Republican Senator who has some brains and compassion. Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin has blasted his asshole colleagues for stalling on this bill. You can go to progressillinois.com/2009/10/16/nelp-thousands-lose-benefits to read about it.

    • Jhardcastle

I left Chicago in 1973 never went back. Weather and violence. Not because of the politics. That I agreed with. At least we always knew where the politicans stood. Both hands outs!

  109. Dionne

I’m with you all for holding marches and rallies. I have posted on MoveOn.org Facebook page about what’s happening today. It’s posted on their Fan Page. There was no way to send an email at their website. I posted on Bill Maher’s Facebook page, hoping he will talk about it on his show tonight. I even posted on Ed Schulze’s Facebook page yesterday but he only seems to be concerned about the Healthcare debate and he talked about the boy who wasn’t in the balloon today on his show today.

    • Emanon

Hi Dionne: I’m glad to see you on here. I hope you and your son are okay. I was really worried about you & your son.

Also, someone in an earlier post offered to send you and your son winter coats. Check the posts if you haven’t already done so.

I sent e-mails to Keith Olbermann on Countdown at MSNBC and Rachel Maddow at MSNBC, asking them to report on this story. I will also send a letter or e-mail to Anderson Cooper (AC360 at CNN) to ask him to do on story on the Republicans blocking the extension of the unemployment bill.

Congressman Barney Frank said the other night that the most effective way to lobby Congress is to bombard them with calls and letters. He said the most effective lobbyists are the NRA & AARP. He said you never see them march – which is true. Instead, the flood Congress with calls & letters. We can call & send letters without leaving home.

Here is an editorial appearing in NY Times:

    The Unemployed Wait
    October 16, 2009

More than a million jobless Americans are in danger of losing benefits by the end of the year unless Congress passes an extension of unemployment insurance. The House has acted, but the Senate, which has a better bill, has been bogged down by obstruction from Republicans. In these extraordinarily hard times, Congress should extend this vital safety net without further delay.

Unemployment insurance, one of the great legacies of the New Deal, is intended to provide laid-off workers with an income while they look for their next job. With the unemployment rate at nearly 10 percent nationally — and at 10.3 percent in New York City — it has been hard to line up that next job. The Department of Labor recently reported that there were more than six people looking for every opening.

There are now more than five million Americans — roughly one-third of the unemployed — who have been out of work for six months or longer, according to the National Employment Law Project, a record since data was first recorded in 1948.

Benefits vary by state, but most cut off benefits after 26 weeks. Congress has extended benefits several times, most recently in February, but for many workers they are again running out.

The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, and other Democrats have introduced a bill that would extend unemployment insurance by up to an additional 14 weeks in all 50 states, with another six weeks for states with a jobless rate above 8.5 percent. It is an improvement on a bill passed by the House, which would extend benefits only in states with unemployment above 8.5 percent.

February’s extension, which included a $25-a-week increase in benefits, kept 800,000 people out of poverty, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Putting more money in the pockets of the unemployed provided much-needed stimulus for the entire economy.

Every day that the Republicans continue to block an extension — fighting over amendments to the bill or delaying a vote — means thousands more Americans pushed closer to the edge of despair.

    • Sushiboo

      Emanon —

Thanks for taking the time to post this. It was nice to wake up to learn that the NYT is helping to bring attention to our plight.
Good editorial, concise and to the point.

      • Emanon

Hopefully, with more media coverage, we can shame the Republican Senators into doing the right thing by dropping their objections and passing this bill by unanimous consent.

BTW – Goldman Sachs is going to give out 21 Billion (yes, Billion not Million) Dollars in bonus money to its employees at the end of this year (2009). This is one of the financial institutions which received TARP money from the federal government.

  112. Jhardcastle

Great article. New York is not holding up the train. If the GOP would tell the bankers that they are going to tax 75% of all bonus’s they are pouring out we would have some money in the bank. I don’t see them fighting over this.

  113. Jhardcastle

I found out why Palin is coming to Texas. She is compaining for Perry our Gov. Now that is a pair matched in HELL. This is the nut with the “tea party” that wanted to leave the UNION. Then someone whispered in his ear that Texas get’s more federal money than any other state in the UNION. I didn’t vote for him or Palin. I have not heard a word from him since he put his foot in his mouth! Then again nobody had a clue what George W. was doing in Texas and then he ran for Pres. We don’t have a state income tax or I would not be here. That’s why a lot of military retiree’s settle here. Oh and we have a lot of military bases which would be removed from Texas if the Gov. left the union.

  114. Jhardcastle

I may have run across a website that really keeps up with enemployment extention issues.

    FYI:

    LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Republican strategy no help to those in need
    Richard C. Trenkler, Las Vegas

    Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 | 2:04 a.m.

Ten percent of the U.S. population is unemployed and, if you add the underemployed and those who gave up looking for work, roughly 15 percent to 20 percent of the population is directly affected by this Great Recession. Worse, the unemployment picture is expected to worsen, directly affecting even more Americans. By the time unemployment peaks, a majority of Americans will be directly or indirectly affected.

So what have the Republicans done in response? They have decided to block an unemployment insurance extension proposal in the Senate. Do these senators understand that millions of people and their families are going to be out on the streets and unable to feed their children? Have these senators learned anything from history?

The last time Republicans acted this way, during the Great Depression, they were kept out of power for generations. The situation today is that the American people are down and see two people walking by, a Republican and a Democrat. They see the Democrat is trying to give a hand up. They see the Republican who just says no.

People do not forget the actions of those who caused their families undue pain.

    Another article.

Kyl and Hatch Block Unemployment Aid for Tens of Thousands of America’s Jobless

by Mike Hall, Oct 16, 2009

Because of the actions of two Republican senators, every day this month 7,000 jobless workers have lost their unemployment insurance (UI) coverage. Each day these two Republicans continue to stand in the way of Senate passage of a UI extension, 7,000 more workers will run out of benefits.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has tried twice to bring the UI measure to a vote on the Senate floor. First Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), then Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) blocked action.

Christine Owens, executive director for the National Employment Law Project (NELP), says workers are “devastated” by the Republican roadblock.

Unemployed workers across the country are devastated and dismayed by the failure of the U.S. Senate to extend their lifeline. Every day, 7,000 additional workers are facing the total loss of benefits, in many cases after struggling to find work for more than a year and a half.

Ricky Macoy, a Navy veteran and an electrician with 30 years of experience, lost his job after a government contractor pulled the plug halfway through the project. He was supporting himself and his 11-year-old son through a combination of his unemployment insurance, his savings and by pawning his tools. His unemployment ran out two weeks ago, his savings are depleted. He tells NELP:

We have survived some hard times, especially this past year when work was nowhere to be found. Unemployment benefits have kept us afloat, but now we may soon end up homeless without them. What the Senate does now will make all the difference for me and my family.

The official unemployment rate now is 9.8 percent, while the number of those who have given up looking for work or are underemployed stands at an appalling 26 million workers.

Click here to tell the Senate it’s time to pass an extension of UI benefits.

In September, the House overwhelmingly passed a UI extension that called for an additional 13 weeks of (UI) for jobless workers in high unemployment states (more than 8.5 percent) who have exhausted their benefits without finding new work.

Last week, the AFL-CIO urged the Senate to approve legislation that provides 14 weeks of benefits to all jobless workers who can’t find new work and an additional six weeks for those in high unemployment states. Says AFL-CIO Government Affairs Director William Samuel:

Failure to extend benefits would pull the safety net out from under laid-off workers who are struggling to find jobs that have become increasingly scarce…a record 5 million workers have been unemployed for six months or more and there are now six unemployed workers for every available job in the United States.

NELP estimates 400,000 workers exhausted their benefits in September and without any extension, another 1.3 million will run out of benefits by year’s end.

    Says Owens:

It’s shameful and callous. Because the Senate has not acted, hundreds of thousands of workers are languishing without any means to support their families in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. It’s time for the Senate to do right by the families hardest hit by the recession—the Senate needs to do whatever it takes, working weekends included, to make this happen.

  119. Sushiboo

Dionne, you are so right that everything takes so long. Bear with me here: honestly, this is the short version of the circus hoops I’m jumping through.

I was looking into some schooling when the woman told me I could most likely get it paid for through the Work Investment Act (WIA) — I’d never heard of it. (http://www.doleta.gov/USWORKFORCE/) To begin the process I had to go to what is called a One Stop Center (I’m in CA) that assists the unemployed. I had to sit through a work shop only to find out I had to complete paperwork just to see if I would qualify (I already knew I did). Then, 1) I had to notify the EDD of my desire for schooling; and 2) I have to wait for an initial appointment once they have reviewed the paperwork to go over this issue still further and then, maybe if the all the planets in the universe are perfectly aligned, eventually discuss schooling. This was two weeks ago and I still have not gotten that appointment. Heaven knows how long getting into a program will take, even though I’ve ID’d one and it is on their approved list. THEN, if they approve the schooling, my UE benefits stop until the EDD (separate from the One Stop program) confirms I really am in school/training. This, but naturally of course, will hold up my UE checks for about 3 weeks, but once they get their confirmation, benefits will resume and I will get paid those weeks retroactively. Sigh.

I hope the food stamps come through before you are in more of a bind than you are now.

  120. Jhardcastle

Doinne, the food stamp program is good. Now they are calling it SNAP in Texas. When you get your letter call your phone company and ask for a form for a discount on your phone bill. Federal law they have to give it to you. Also if your child is in school they offer Breakfast and Lunch hang on to the approval letter it opens many doors. A lot of the TV networks also support coats for kids check with them.

  121. Sushiboo

Excellent Jhardcastle. There are so many programs, but as with WIA, they tend to hide them or let’s just say they don’t seem to promote them. Just like when my youngest, who had ADHD, was in school, they NEVER told me he was entitled to special help and/or programs. We had him tested and he had no learning disabilities (well, other than ADHD) and was actually extremely bright. I learned this after he graduated from HS. But that was a different nightmare.

BTW, if I had known, I would have shared, a couple of the websites various people have mentioned I’ve already been following but you all seemed to have such a good handle on things I figured it would be redundant.

  122. Jhardcastle

Most of us have never had to ask for any help and there is a stigma to us asking for assistance. I have a dear friend on disablity and I would not have even tried without her steering me. Maybe the GOP will get a flame under their butts this week and vote yes.

  123. Sushiboo

This breaks down this whole mess:

    http://www.opencongress.org/wiki/Emergency_unemployment_compensation

If I am reading this correctly, for people like me whose benefits end just after the 1st and 2nd cut-off dates (on 01/02/10 and don’t currently qualify for any extensions) the second house bill, 3404 is the only one of the three (3548 and 1699 being the others) that would benefit me, which is a scary thought:

Does anyone know if HR 3404 has been sent to the senate or if either the other two bills have any amendments regarding the provisions of 3548 and 1699 that apparently state:

“. . . eligible, but only if those individuals had exhausted their regular UC benefits and both Tier 1 and Tier 2 of EUC payments.”

If not, I’m in a lot of trouble, along with a lot of other people who have lost jobs between July and now, as well as people who are still being laid off.

Also, is this scheduled for the floor today? I noted Jaron’s comment about 2 p.m. today.

  124. Jhardcastle

I twittered Rick Sanchez and Don Lemon at CNN about unemployment vote. Rick likes to get on a bandwagon for a cause. Maybe if we get CNN rolling someone will listen. I hope someone knows about HR 3404 I don’t but I have read this stuff and when everything is said and done we all get the extention.

  125. Sushiboo

I’m sorry J, am I following your last sentence correctly, you are unfamiliar with 3404 but it’s your belief that everyone will benefit in the end?

I have to admit, I’m glad my doctor gave me and Rx for anxiety, I had to take one this a.m. If it was just me I had to worry about, while this would still be draining, my 85 yr old mom lives with me — she almost died this year, now has a pacemaker and due to a couple of ministrokes isn’t quite as capable or sometimes as all there as she was before. The worst case scenarios, like living in your car or going to a shelter become beyond your worst nightmare when you factor her in. She lived through the depression eating bacon fat sandwiches and their family lost their home — I simply can’t let anything like that happen to her — she was all that stood between me and financial collapse when my ex left and helped take care of my kids when I was working.

Sorry, I just feel more overwhelmed than usual today. It’s been a real struggle for me because before the world as we knew it collapsed last year at this time I was already being treated for severe depression. Not surprisingly, I still am, but I am also still standing and manage to slog through dealing with all this and the constantly arising brick walls I’m running into.

    Good idea with the twitter.

  126. Jhardcastle

I lost my mother when I was 37 my dad when I was 42 and my husband when I was 53 and I am an only child with no children. I am flying alone. I know about anxiety. I always say I am not going to be eligible for the next extention but I have been. My name is Joann.

  127. Jhardcastle

If you Twitter you can get senate vote info daily at 3:00 pm at Follow Senate vote at twitter.

  128. Sushiboo

I’m so very sorry to hear that Joann, my name is Jann. My dad died when I was 38. I too am an only child, but do have two sons, 29 and 25. The oldest wouldn’t have room for us and the younger one lives with me, as he had to drop out of school for lack of money and can only find a part-time job. Living with me is actually is a blessing as he helps with my mom.

That aside, for different reasons, I know about flying without a net . . .

Joann, if you need a friend and want to write privately, here is a transitional email address: sm2290@gmail.com. Let me know though if you do as I rarely check it.

Your comment about the extension gives me hope. Thanks.

  129. Sushiboo

    J- unfortunately, I don’t twitter.

  130. Jhardcastle

Twitter for me is a way to get to the newspeople at the networks. I don’t use it for anyother reason. Jann I am at jhardcastle47@hotmail.com if anyone wants to just talk. I’ll e-mail you today.

    From a blog on opencongress:
    Senate Schedule October 19

    Convenes: 2:00pm

Morning Business until 5:30pm with senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10 minutes each.

Following Morning Business, the Senate will resume the motion to proceed to S.1776, the Medicare Physicians Fairness Act of 2009, with the time until 5:30pm equally divided and controlled between the Leaders or their designees.

We expect to reach an agreement to consider S.1776. As a result, there will be no roll call votes on Monday.

  132. Perplexed1

It is not just Republicans it’s Democrats too. They were the first to hold it up when Shaheen wanted all states included. Include them yes, but do not wake up at the last minute and object to passing it as is for the rest of us. She could have amended it later. Now because of Shaheen and Kyl everyone has been held up. And what about Democrats – don’t they hold a majority? Why aren’t they just passing it without the Republicans? What both parties are doing to hold this up is shameful. There wasn’t one mention of it in on the Senate Floor log today. It shows they started at 2:02 and it ended at 4:28 – what’s up with that???. It is clear they do not care about the unemployed. They only care about your vote when they need it. I just did the paperwork to register as independent and next time election comes around I am going to clean house and vote all incumbents out!

  133. Dionne

It’s time to march down to the Senate office. Especially if nothing is done by this Thursday. We can all say we were job hunting. Applying for a Senate job since they’re not working for the people of this country. We can all meet at bus/train stations and march our way to their building. We are searching for jobs that aren’t there. We can’t make anyone give us a job if there aren’t any to give. I’m tired of complaints falling on deaf ears. It’s insulting.

  134. Jhardcastle

No one even brings up the bill on any of the news channels. It’s like we have been forgotten. If I could afford it I would be getting on that bus with Dionne.

  135. Sushiboo

Besides the fact Emanon has said marching is not effective, I’d suggest marching on Washington much as the Bonus Marchers did in 1932 except for what it took to make their sacrifice eventually work. It is a story that is little known unless times have changed since I was in school back in the middle ages because it wasn’t in my history book; I read about it in my late 20’s. I think there is a bit of resonance here. A somewhat brief, ok long, synopsis:

“In October 1929 the stock market crashed, 40 percent of the paper values of common stock crashed with it, and the nation was soon plunged into its greatest economic depression. Businesses went under; factory lay-offs put countless workers on the streets; many factories closed their doors never to open again; banks began to fail; and homes and farms were lost as masses of Americans became displaced. By 1932 nearly one in four Americans was unemployed. For an army of World War I veterans it was time to cash in on a bonus Congress had already agreed they deserved, but they were 13 years early and the government was not ready to pay up.” http://www.thefreelibrary.com/March+of+the+Bonus+Army-a0146219227

“By the summer of 1932, thousands of unemployed veterans and their families traveled to Washington, D.C., from across the United States to lobby Congress. By the summer, some estimates put the force at between 15,000 and 40,000. They camped wherever they could. Some of these “Bonus Marchers” camped out in shacks and tents, which they mockingly called “Hoovervilles” after President Herbert Hoover. Some slept in abandoned buildings or erected tents. Others occupied abandoned and partially dismantled buildings near the Capitol. But many lived in makeshift shacks along the mudflats of the Anacostia River.”
    gunnyg.wordpress.com/2009/01/18/1932-bonus-march-re-patton-macarthur-eisenhower-etc/

“Camps sprang up around the city, with many camped near the U.S. Capitol Building, where many politicians viewed them as an unruly mob and revolutionary threat. The stage was set, and the kettle of conflict was reaching the boiling point.” http://www.thefreelibrary.com/March+of+the+Bonus+Army-a0146219227

However, they were unsuccessful, Hoover ordered the marchers removed:

“Having no other place to go, the majority of the Bonus Army remained encamped in the city, despite the fact that Congress had adjourned for the summer. Finally, President Hoover ordered the Army to forcibly remove the veterans. On July 28 a force of tanks and cavalry under the command of General Douglas MacArthur stormed the camps and drove the veterans out. Their makeshift houses were then set ablaze.” http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/bonusarmy.htm

“No shots were fired, but many were injured by bricks, clubs and bayonets. After Hoover ordered a halt to the army’s march, MacArthur again took things into his own hands, violently clearing the Anacostia campsite, killing three marchers and wounding many.

    . . .

Though the marchers failed to get immediate results, in 1936 Congress authorized early payment of the bonuses. By June 30, 1937, VA had certified as payable nearly 3.5 million applications from World War I veterans for settlement of their certificates.” gunnyg.wordpress.com/2009/01/18/1932-bonus-march-re-patton-macarthur-eisenhower-etc

And it only took four years . . .

“Those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
    — George Santayana

  136. Jaron Talotta

I read from one Democratic senator that these Republican senators had no problems approving the bailouts for the other greedy and corrupt Wall Street assholes but when it comes to the people on Main Street forget it.

  137. Jhardcastle

Republcans have never been for the people. I was a protester outside the Sheridan Hotel in 1967 during the dem convention. Mayor Dailey issued a shoot to kill order to the protesters. Yes is was a war protest but the they didn’t care. Now they can’t get away with as much too many camera.

  138. Jhardcastle

There is an article that 14 senators held a press conferrence demanding the republicans pass the extention bill. They said to continue writing and calling the senators.

  139. Sushiboo

I received this from Barbara Boxer (S-CA)

Thank you for writing to me about extending unemployment benefits. I appreciate hearing from you, and I agree that Congress must swiftly extend unemployment insurance to help America’s jobless workers.

I am pleased to be an original co-sponsor of S.1647, the Assistance for Unemployed Workers Extension Act. This vital legislation would provide 13 additional weeks of benefits to workers who live in states with an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent or higher, significantly improving the lives of unemployed workers and their families here in California.

The House of Representatives has passed its own unemployment extension bill by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 331-48. H.R.3548, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009, would extend unemployment benefits by providing 14 additional weeks in all 50 states. In addition, those states that average an 8.5 percent unemployment rate or higher, over three months, would receive an additional six weeks of benefits.

The Senate should move quickly to pass one of these bills; recent numbers indicate that the national unemployment rate is currently 9.8 percent, while California’s unemployment rate stands at 12.2 percent – the highest jobless rate since the Great Depression.

Unfortunately, the Senate minority is blocking this crucial legislation, demonstrating obstructionism at its very worst at a time when many struggling Americans are suffering to make ends meet.

While there are some encouraging signs that our economy is beginning to recover from the worst of the recession, unemployment rates remain unacceptably high. Be assured that I will continue to work with my colleagues to pass legislation that will provide much needed relief for those individuals who are unemployed.

Again, thank you for writing to me about this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me again about this or any other issue.

    Barbara Boxer
    United States Senator

  140. Sushiboo

I can’t vouch for this but from a post on the OpenCongress message board:

This just in .. from the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.): the upper chamber will hold a procedural vote next Tuesday afternoon to PROCEED TO LEGISLATION extending unemployment insurance (UI) nationwide.
The cloture vote is indication that Reid and GOP leaders failed to reach an agreement on amendments to the bill. I’m not sure what a “procedural vote” is but I’m not sure if that’s what we’re looking for here. I wish the GOP would hold off on those ACORN amendments until a better day. Hopefully the president won’t comment because it seems that the GOP usually goes against whatever he recommends. Meaning, in this case .. not good.

    • Ryder

Getting a reply from Barbara Boxer doesn’t mean a damn thing. I’ve gotten many from her and they are nothing more than form letters. She is part of the reason a situation arose years ago and a business went under because she wouldn’t step up to the plate after she said she would. No faith in her or Feinstein. Fast talkers both.

  141. Michele

Does anyone actually know when this is going to be voted on and signed? Our news in Florida has been stating for the past three weeks that it’ll be voted on and still nothing! Our benefits have been exhausted here since September and most of us who were receiving benefits aren’t even able to receive food stamps or other assistance because we made too much money last year, or the time we worked.
I have been out of work for almost two years, but received a Profit Sharing last year so I have not been elgible for any other assistance. I have three minor children and am getting ready to lose my apartment because this is taking so long.
Our jobs here, when they are listed, are for minimum wage and that alone wouldn’t pay anything. We have so many homeless people here right now and more every day. Kids are not even bothering to attend school because they don’t expect to be able to attend a school near them if they become homeless.
I pray everyday, that someone will hear us, all of us, and finally help us with our needs. It’s not that we don’t want to work or that we’re not looking, there simply is nothing available to us!

  142. Jhardcastle

Ok, have you applied for public housing, it’s better then the street. Are you on food stamps and do the kids have medicaid? You will still be able to collect unemployment, a precentage based on what you make. You can get some assistance on your utilities for “depending where you are” here it’s called community services.

No vote is on a Senate calendar but that is always subject to change.

I know it’s not easy out there but also go to the mayors office and see if there is a program they have locally. You have kids you have to get them in school. They need a routine or you will have some trouble. God, bless and keep you safe.

  143. Jhardcastle

We may have good news. Harry Reid has requested a vote in 30 hrs. see attached.

    http://www.unemployedworkers.org

    • Ryder

If there is a way to stall that vote it will happen. He can demand all he wants but seeing is believing. Even if it goes to vote that does not mean it will pass. The Republican idiots can still screw it up. Obama needs to step in but I don’t even hear him talking about it. He’s too busy entertaining and campaigning for other people. Start crossing your fingers. I for one have no money to pay my rent or upcoming bills. What’s next?? Hard telling but at this point I don’t see government on our side yet. Is this extension, if it happens, going to be retroactive to the date we received our last check?? It should be so we can get caught up on our bills and rent and I for one will be able to get medications that I am supposed to take daily but cannot afford. No wonder people go to Canada and Mexico for their medications. I’m am also going there and that means American dollars, what few we have, leaves America. Wake up America.

  144. Ryder

Did you notice??? Not a thing today about unemployment. Unemployment is taxed by our government so does that mean we work for the government?? If so why aren’t we getting vacation pay, healthcare, dental and vision and all actual working benefits?? They think that it is such a travesty that we deserve and need this money but also fail to admit that the money we get goes right back into the economy when we pay our bills and buy food, etc. and on top of that all of it is taxed. Sooooooo the government gets a LARGE portion of what they “give” us back right away. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that this is better than most investments and it helps American citizens. The media, who are mostly Republicans, also is trying to convince everyone that unemployment is getting better because there were fewer continuing claims this week. Look Morons…..it is because we are losing our benefits not because we are going back to work. How stupid can you be!!!! And the Republicans in Washington try to sling the same crap.

  145. Sushiboo

Campers, it appears the “action” on covering this has moved to a different Senatus page: https://senatus.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/cloture-filed-on-the-unemployment-compensation-extension-act/

Ryder, I think you will get more info about what’s going on there. It seems 10/27 is the next golden date.

And, while I usually like to think of myself as intelligent, the workings of the senate baffle me. There is a good link there explaining cloture, which I was reading through when I got a posting notification for here . . .

    • Ryder

Got all that Sushiboo. Been on that page too and several others I am on every day and they all say about the same thing. I’m familiar with cloture as having worked in city government and it does not mean a whole lot. The filibustering has to stop but it does not mean it will make the bill pass. The Republicans still have to change some of their votes to yes in order for it to pass. And why in the world they tax us on every unemployment dollar we get is beyond me. That’s even more reason to stop the shenanigans in Washington. They get the damn money back anyway.

      • Sushiboo

“And why in the world they tax us on every unemployment dollar we get is beyond me.”

It’s quite simple: because the assholes can.

  146. Jhardcastle

Nobody on unemployment can afford to run for office even dog catcher. These people have to have deep pocket money. If they win then they have to kiss ass for the people that gave them money. Yes, they are morons they don’t come out of the woods till they need more money to run again. Harry Reid is working on pushing the bill. I have two GOP Senators. I am in republican hell. Oh let’s not forget the idiot Gov. Let’s all keep emailing and praying.

    • Ryder

Jhardcastle….you are right on the money. Every word the truth and America is in Republican HELL. There is an old saying, “Money talks and bullshit walks”. We know who has all the money and they think we are full of BS. Sooner or later Washington is going to realize that us out of work Americans are not dummies. We are hard working people supporting ourselves and our families and misfortune via government has sent us packing to unemployment but we deserve that money and seeing as we have to pay taxes on it too what the hell do they have to cry about. Let’s all STOP paying taxes and see how fast we start getting threatening letters from the IRS. But they don’t get that treatment when they actually owe us anything. They have their electrical fences around their rich political selves to protect them. It’s called POLITICS!!!

  147. Jaron Talotta

They said on Tuesday Oct. 27, there’s going to be a procedural vote on this. Does anybody know what a procedural vote is? I’m guessing that we need to go through more bullshit hurdles to get this thing going.

    • Ryder

Jaron….Procedural means nothing. It’s just a stall tactic and you are right…more bullshit. What they are doing is voting to vote which is pretty damn stupid. Vote and get it over with for God’s sake. The rich and richer Republicans can and will stall this passing for as long as they want until Obama steps in. He can end this whole mess with Executive power procedures. It can be passed without the normal % required to pass and move to final step without signature but I don’t see that happening especially while the media continues to report that unemployment is going down. Like I said…of course it is because people are losing benefits. They could have done all this while they were talking cloture and procedural but that only shows that this will probably go on until the end of the year when almost all will be out of benefits. And as for getting your benefits if you are on food stamps, etc. like someone said earlier….that all depends on where you live. CA is not so gracious. I don’t have any money but I think we should all get together and march on Washington. I have a few flight miles and one free flight and maybe some of you have the same. I bet they would threaten to throw us all in jail if we show up at the White House and refuse to leave until this extension is passed and the money is in the mail….and make that retroactive while you’re at it!!!!!

  148. Sushiboo

I tried to find out on the Senate’s page under the glossery section and could not find an explanation. Haven’t had time to research any further. But, more bullshit sounds pretty close to the mark.

    • Ryder

You can take that to the bank Sushiboo and right now that’s all we have to take to the bank….Washington Republican Bullshit!!!!!

  149. Jhardcastle

I just sent Harry Reid a thank you note for his hard work on trying to move the bill. I am going to find a dem. to support down here. When I go to the grocery store I pass a yard that still has a MCCain-Palin campain sign. OH, how I want to stop and burn that thing. But, I would get caught and have to pay a fine. I pray for their souls they have sold out to the GOP.

  150. Jaron Talotta

I sent Obama an email stating to him that the reason I voted for him is because I thought he would stand in the corner and support the common folk unlike his predecessor. But I don’t know. It just seems like we’re being ignored by him even though I realize he has a huge agenda of topics to deal with but you would think that he at least would be alarmed and appalled at what these political games are doing to some of the common folk like us.

  151. Ryder

Here are the shows that have the so-called politicians who care…..LOL…this weekend.

Face the Nation (CBS) – John McCain (R-AZ) and Russ Feingold (D-WI)
State of the Union (CNN) – Ben Nelson (D-NE), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Jim Webb (D-VA)
Fox News Sunday – Carl Levin (D-MI) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
Meet the Press (NBC) – John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
This Week (ABC) – Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO)

I have NO faith in anything they might have to say about the unemployment extension but I might watch one just for a good laugh because they are all laughable rich idiots.

  152. Ryder

Don’t thank anybody in Washington for all their hard work until they can prove they have actually done something for us. As of yet that IS NOT the case. The proof is in the pudding folks!!!! Now they are saying the Healthcare bill won’t be resolved until after Xmas so you can imagine the strong possibility that the unemployment extension bill won’t go anywhere, if at all until next year. I say this because the focus has been on the healthcare issue, that can wait, and every other ridiculous bill I read about on the Senate site. Such crap taking up critical time from crucial issues blows my mind but then again we’re talking about Washington. Obama just issued a swine flu emergency and he can do the same thing about the unemployment emergency if he was so inclined. My faith in him has gone right down the tube. Of course he has a lot on his plate but stop the parties, campaigning for others and other such nonsense and take care of some very critical issues and then we can see he really means business when he speaks. He hems and haws more now than ever. Another getting comfortable President??? Probably!!!!

  153. Ryder

Surprised to not see anyone on here already. Don’t stop the yelling and complaining folks because that is exactly what Washington wants us to do….shut up. That is playing their card game and then they can say we don’t need the unemployment extensions and other benefits the government owes us. They are dragging their feet and focusing on gay rights, that sure as hell can wait, healthcare which can wait, Afghanistan….we don’t even belong there and other frivolous nonsense just to see how long they can make us struggle. They need to know that we are down but we are not out.

  154. Ryder

I just read the latest update regarding the unemployment extension. According to some Republican Senators they are very upset with their colleagues for “playing political games” with this bill in order to favor some of their pet projects…such as ACORN. What the hell does ACORN have to do with it and after all the crooked blundering they have committed what are they even involved in any of this for? Goes to show you exactly where those Republican Senators are putting their bucks…in the pockets of more proven crooks. It also said that the American people would be more outraged than we already are if we “really” knew what was holding up this critical piece of legislation. Oh no we wouldn’t!!! I don’t think the government knows just exactly how outraged the unemployed American citizens are!! We are more than aware of the games being played in Washington and it has always been that way and every time Republicans get involved it becomes a damn mess. I hope all you Republican supporters can see what is happening here and refuse to vote that way again. With the demolition of their party maybe this country will turn around and get back on it’s feet. It certainly will not with them on board. Pray folks that this passes this week and is out to us no later than next week. Many, including myself, will be homeless if that isn’t the case.

Ok…so the cloture vote passed but that doesn’t speed things up. It still means that it can be debated which is what the hell they have been doing all along. They need to block the amendments attached to it like the First Time Homebuyers issue which has NOTHING to do with unemployment and some others that have NOTHING to do with it. They need to lock all the Republicans in a jail cell, pass the bill and then let them out. Keep complaining and fighting folks because that is the only way we will get noticed. I would love to go to the Washington Tea Party but I live in CA and have no money for rent or anything else. All I have is enough sky miles for one trip but that would leave me no where to stay, etc. My blessings to all who attend and know I will be there in support and spirit.

  157. Jaron Talotta

Doesn’t this mean they will bring this to a final vote this week or next week? I’ve read that the White House has expressed their support for the extension to be passed quickly. Hopefully that will help but then again those few Republican assholes might want to keep playing these games at our expense just because Obama supports this.

    • Ryder

Jaron….If the damn White House is so supportive of this bill then Obama should step in and make it happen. He CAN do that. He’s too busy campaigning for others when he should be taking care of something so critical as the unemployed workers who are losing everytihng they have on a daily basis. This could still take weeks even after the cloture.

  158. Jhardcastle

I’m back on directv and I will be watching C-Span but there is no information on a vote for the bill anywhere. Between the health bill not much news out there.

UPDATE: I was told this is a done deal, but I haven’t seen an announcement yet – so it might still change. The tax credit was expanded to move-up and higher income buyers. The amount of the credit was reduced to a maximum of $7,290.

From Bloomberg: Senate Close to Deal Replacing Homebuyer Tax Credit

    The details:

Income eligibility for first-time home buyers stays at $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples.

For move-up buyers, income eligibility is $125,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples.

There is a minimum 5 year residency requirement in their current home for move-up home buyers.

The tax credit is the lesser of $7,290 or 10% of the purchase price.

The credit runs from Dec. 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010, with an additional 60 day period to close escrow. (So end of April to sign contract, end of June to close escrow)

Expect bill to be signed by Friday.

This is obviously bad economics, but it must be good politics. The first-time home buyer impact will fade (and will probably cost over $100,000 per additional home sold). The move-up portion will probably be even less effective.

Apparently this tax credit will be combined with the extension of the unemployment benefits to avoid a veto (the real reason the extension was being held up).

I don’t think anyone much cares what is included in this as long as it passes but the homebuyer stuff has NOTHING to do with unemployment. Just another way for the Republicans to twist the knife in our backs. Cloture ends at 8:30 p.m. PST so we’ll see if this actually goes to vote or not tomorrow. Why don’t they have an emergency session like they do for other nonsense that can wait?? And…how about taking the 10 million or so for the damn rocket they just set off and putting that towards unemployment? We DO NOT need a space program, especially in this economy. We don’t belong in outer space and it is so many wasted dollars that could be used for many worthwhile programs to help Americans.

  160. Ryder

On the Unemployed Workers site there is an explanation regarding retroactive payments. I don’t think any of us expected it to be that good and will take the “moving forward” extension with no argument but….we should get every cent we have lost because of Republican Senators screwing around with our lives. We already know we could not get a lump sum anyway…that’s not how it works but if someone wins an appeal from unemployment they are paid the monies lost in checks for each pay period until all is paid. There is no reason that cannot be done now. Nope…we are not asking too much…only what we deserve and the more we get in unemployment the more in taxes the government will get back in “Unemployment Taxes”. Every dollar we get is taxed and you bet if we refuse to pay those taxes the government will be knocking on our door because we owe THEM something. There is no rhyme or reason for the delay on this bill except the Republicans are trying to punish the public for their not getting as many lousy Republicans into Washington as they wanted. Guess What??? Come election time again they will have even less because of their idiocy we are witnessing right now.

  161. Jaron Talotta

I don’t mean to turn this into a racial issue but take into consideration I am a white person stating this but I find it peculiar that the 13 Rep. senators that voted against the procedural vote were mostly from the southern states with a high unemployment rate. I think these senators think that they still represent the Confederacy.

  162. Jhardcastle

The word is “goodoldboys” in the south it is one word. The GOP only shakes hands when there is money in it. “We” are not in the club. We are depending on an “act of congress” that snake moves slowly.

  163. Jaron Talotta

I just read an article from The Washington Independent. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) offered a theory about why these assholes seem content to crawl toward passage of this extension: they’ve simply been sheltered from the crisis. This to me really hits the nail on the head. He states, “Not very many of our colleagues really know any unemployeed workers. We don’t spend our time with people who are really suffering.”

  164. Debbie

I have gone through the Constitution.Does any one know if there is anything in the Constitution where we can go over the Senators and Congress to pass a bill.I read if something is not settled and back to President in 10 days that it becomes Law.

Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate,
shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United
States; If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his
Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the
Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after
such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it
shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it
shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it
shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be
determined by Yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and
    against the Bill shall be
entered on the Journal of each House respectively. If
any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays
excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law,
in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment
prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.

Every Order, Resolution, or Vote to which the Concurrence of the Senate and
House of Representatives may be necessary (except on a question of Adjournment)
shall be presented to the President of the United States; and before the Same
shall take Effect, shall be approved by him, or being disapproved by him, shall
be repassed by two thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives, according
to the Rules and Limitations prescribed in the Case of a Bill.

  165. Jhardcastle

As they say, shit walks money talks we are caugh in the middle. I believe is the consitution but nothing seems to follow the rules.

  166. Jhardcastle

Check the US Senate page for yesterday they have the house bill ready for floor debate. We are moving!

    • Jaron Talotta

      Hey Jhardcastle,

I read that they’re going to move on this on Monday. By the way, one of the 13 “good ole boys” that voted no on the cloture was from your state of Texas. The crook’s name is Sen. John Cornyn, R-Tx.

    • Jhardcastle

Do you think this comes as a surprise!!!!!! The Gov. of this state refused the stimulas package including unemployment extention and had to be overridden by the state congress. Just listen to Cornyn he has been on TV and he is a total idiot. Like I said of the Dem’s run Mickey Mouse I will be happy to bring my mickey mouse ears and vote for him. I am stuck with two GOP Senators and a GOP Gov.

  167. Jhardcastle

OK, we have a new week ahead of us. Let’s all pray today and push the system contact everyone in Washington tomorrow!!

  168. Jhardcastle

I just checked the Senate schedule after business starts at 2:00 PM the first order of business is the unemployment bill. Cross our collective fingers.

  169. Heidi

Thanks Jhardcastle! That I’m crossing everthing I’ve got!

  170. Jhardcastle

Well, it is now 3:20 ET and they are on health insurance and I don’t think they will get to us at all today. I am watching C-span.

  171. Heidi

Darn it :-0 waiting is so stressful.

  172. Jhardcastle

The senate did vote to close the debate on the HB 85-2 so now they will have to vote yeah or nay on the total extention. Tomorrow they all have to come together to listen the the German Chancellor. Now if they listened to this woman they have have national health for 1/2 century no body seems to have a problem with it. I lived there for 4 yrs and never heard a German complain.

  173. Jhardcastle

The Senate web page shows they will continue discussion on the extention this afternoon. We shall see. I am not seeing anything that this will be retroactive to us that are out of benefits but whatever!

  174. Jhardcastle

The Senate bill passed yesterday with no nay’s now the house is voting today to approve the Senate’s bill. They have a 15 min window to vote for the senate changes. I can not see anyway they will play the games it sould go to the President intact. 1:00 PM CST

    • Sushiboo

      J-

I can tell you for a fact it is not retroactive. I posted the info on the other Senatus site re cloture awhile back. I’ll try to find it for you.

This is from the the unemployed workers site: http://www.unemployedworkers.org/sites/unemployedworkers/index.php/benefits site:

Clarifying Eligibility for the New Extension (October 29, 2009)

“Friends-We understand that many of you may be under the impression that once the unemployment extension bill is passed, it won’t apply to anyone who has already run out of benefits. Let us assure you that is NOT correct. If you have exhausted your full range of federally funded benefits before the passage of this bill, you WILL be eligible for these additional weeks. In that sense, the bill is retroactive in its reach. However, in another important aspect, the bill is NOT retroactive. You will not receive a lump sum payment dating back to the time when you exhausted benefits. The benefits will only be paid going forward. We know this creates a huge hardship for many of you who exhausted benefits weeks or months ago, and it is one of the things we have been speaking about most strongly as this bill has been delayed time and time again. We know you are falling deeper into debt with each passing week, and we are sorry to say that there is just no possible way that these benefits could have ever been designed to be paid retroactively. However, once the bill is passed, you will know that you will have an additional 14 or 20 weeks to depend on going forward, and we hope that provides you with some measure of reassurance.”

    -S

  176. Heidi

So was this passed yet, or not?

  177. Christine

I read that the president signed it on 11/6/09!!!

  178. Jhardcastle

The pres. signed it, now so many of us will pay bills and have a good Thanksgiving and Christmas. Love to all of you and may God bless you and grant you jobs so none of us have to go through this nightmare again. Please remember in the 1930 my parents did not have unemployment until the Dem and FDR passed the bill. So when the Dem’s come up for election VOTE.

  179. Heidi

Happy early Thanksgiving to all of us! This is the best news…And yes. Before this I was not a responsible voter. This has changed me forever.
