Senate Defeats Coburn Substitute Amendment to Food Safety Bill

Senators have defeated a motion to suspend the rules (Rule 22) for purposes of considering a substitute amendment being offered by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510).

The vote was 36-62, with 67 needed for passage.  Basically, if the motion had been adopted, it would have forced an up-or-down vote on Coburn’s amendment.

The substitute would basically scrap the text of the current bill and replace it with Senator Coburn’s Ensuring Greater Food Safety Act.  He says it would “modernize Federal food safety efforts without placing unnecessary burdens on food producers, increasing food prices, or saddling taxpayers with additional debt.”
