Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) “called on Sunday for the president to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve,” the Washington Times reports.
Sen. Richard J. Durbin, saying rising gas prices are a threat to the country’s recovering economy, called on Sunday for the president to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
“I’m worried that if we don’t use the oil reserves, the economic recovery will stall,” Mr. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Two “Republican lawmakers who appeared on the same program disagreed, urging the White House instead to open up domestic energy production by issuing more drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico.”
Sen. Jon Kyle of Arizona and Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California both blamed the Obama administration for a drop in domestic production in the past two years.
