Senate Tables FAA Amendment to End Essential Air Service Program

An amendment offered by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act (S. 223) has been tabled by a vote of 61-38.

It would eliminate the Essential Air Services (EAS) program. The program was “enacted to guarantee that small communities in the United States, which, prior to deregulation, were served by certificated airlines, maintained commercial service.”
