Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), currently the “chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, is running for the No. 2 position in the GOP Conference,” POLITICO reports.
“Let there be no mistake about it: Sen. Cornyn is running for whip,” a senior aide to Cornyn said.
This news obviously comes after Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) announced his intention to retire after his current term expires. He was up for re-election in 2012.
Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), currently the Republican Conference Chair, is also going to run for Republican Whip.
POLITICO notes that Senator John Thune (R-SD) “may also run for whip if he decides against running for the Republican presidential nomination.”
