Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) “today made the following comments regarding Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl’s (R-Ariz.) decision to retire and announced his intention to seek the Chairmanship of the Senate Republican Conference,” according to a press release from his office.
"Senator Kyl’s leadership and experience will be greatly missed in the Senate," Johanns said. "Jon has been a champion of ensuring our nation’s security and financial responsibility. He has been a steady hand in the Senate Republican leadership team and I am grateful that we will benefit from his continued engagement throughout the end of his term in the Senate."
"Senator Alexander’s decision to run for the Whip position opens the role of Conference Chairman. Throughout his tenure, he has helped unify the caucus and provided tremendous leadership. This will mean a reorganization of the Republican leadership in the Senate and I would like step up to a leadership role. Shaping policy has always been my interest and with the challenges our country is facing, I believe it is critical for our conference to show strong leadership as we get our country back on track. I would be honored to serve as Chairman if my colleagues think I am the right person for this position."
