Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) “says he supports including nuclear power in a clean energy standard, as long as it’s done in a way that also helps the development of renewable energy,” according to the AP.
Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico said in a speech Monday that the White House has reached out to his committee to help flesh out clean energy legislation.
President Barack Obama last week called for 80 percent of the nation’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2035, including nuclear and natural gas along with renewables like wind and solar.
In the past, Bingaman has been skeptical of a broader mandate that includes nuclear. But he’s been more receptive to the idea of late, even before Obama’s State of the Union speech.
Bingaman chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
