Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams (R) “plans to officially declare his candidacy in the 2012 Senate race during a Thursday breakfast-time interview with Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune, according to his political consultant Corbin Casteel,” the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Williams’ entry into the race surprises virtually no one after he resigned from his post on the energy-regulating Railroad Commission last week. One of the two other commission members, Elizabeth Ames Jones, also announced her candidacy in the Senate race this week.
Other candidates are former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams of Fort Worth and former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz. Others eyeing the race are Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Arlington.
