Missouri Senate: Talent Not Expected to Run

Former Senator Jim Talent (R) “is expected to announce in the coming days that he won’t mount a comeback bid for Senate in Missouri, multiple Republicans tell POLITICO.”

Talent’s decision against a 2012 campaign was telegraphed in recent weeks with his lack of activity in the state an an overseas trip with almost-certain presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

But his move to pass on the contest removes the prohibitive front runner from the race while simultaneously boosting the prospects of former state treasurer Sarah Steelman, who jolted the field by jumping into the campaign on Dec. 1.

Talent “lost his seat to Sen. Claire McCaskill during the 2006 Democratic wave by just 48,000 votes.”
