Utah Senate: Early Warning Signs for Hatch in New Poll

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) “has said he’s expecting a tough re-election bid next year, but he may be in more danger than he expected,” Yahoo! News reports.

A new Utah Policy poll released Monday finds Hatch in third place in a hypothetical GOP primary matchup with former Gov. Jon Huntsman and Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

Forty-eight percent of Utah Republicans prefer Huntsman, President Obama’s ambassador to China, even though he is unlikely to run.

Worse for Hatch is that [he] narrowly trails Chaffetz, a tea party candidate who has hinted he might challenge the longtime senator next year. According to the poll, 23 percent of Utah Republicans prefer Chaffetz in the race, compared with 21 percent who said they would support Hatch. Among "very conservative" Utah voters, Hatch fares even worse, trailing Chaffetz 19 percent to 48 percent.
