Voters went to the polls yesterday to pick their party candidates for Kentucky’s Senate race.
Rand Paul “defeated Republican establishment favorite Trey Grayson in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, a closely watched race that was a test of the tea party movement’s strength,” the AP reports.
National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Cornyn (R-TX):
“I congratulate Dr. Rand Paul for his victory in Kentucky’s Republican primary election today. After a spirited and open primary, Rand Paul effectively communicated his commitment to Kentucky values and has gained voters’ respect and trust.
“Voters in the Bluegrass State deserve a real leader who will work tirelessly for their best interests – not another rubberstamp for President Obama’s liberal spending agenda. That’s why I am confident that we will keep this seat in Republican control and Kentuckians will elect Rand Paul as their next U.S. Senator this November.”
Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC):
“I want to congratulate Rand Paul on this important victory tonight,” said Senator DeMint. “His message of less spending and less debt is resonating with voters across Kentucky. He’s building a winning coalition of conservatives, independents, and frustrated Democrats who believe in limited government, a strong national defense, and traditional values.
“The Washington establishment threw everything they had at him and yet he prevailed. Rand’s victory is part of an American awakening that is taking place across the country as people embrace the principles of freedom that are the backbone of our country. It shows that Americans want strong leaders who will stand up to the massive spending, bailouts, and debt in Washington that are bankrupting our country.”
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), per MSNBC:
“Dr. Paul ran an outstanding campaign which clearly struck a chord with Kentucky voters and I congratulate him on his impressive victory. Now Kentucky Republicans will unite in standing against the overreaching policies of the Obama Administration. We are spiraling further into unsustainable debt and Kentucky needs Rand Paul in the U.S. Senate because he will work every day to stop this crippling agenda.”
Attorney General Jack Conway “won the Democratic nomination in Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race and will face tea party Republican Rand Paul in this fall’s general election,” the AP reports. He beat Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ):
“Congratulations to Jack Conway on winning a hard-fought primary. Both Jack Conway and Dan Mongiardo deserve credit for waging thoughtful, aggressive campaigns. Tomorrow, we begin the general election and the choice for Kentucky voters could not be any starker. Jack Conway is a crusading attorney general who has taken on the special interests in Kentucky and will shake up Washington by doing the same in the United States Senate.
“Rand Paul would abolish the Department of Education, would disband the Federal Reserve, and would end farm subsidies for Kentucky’s farmers. Rand Paul may love the national media spotlight but he has shown no interest in growing Kentucky’s economy or creating new jobs. The people of Kentucky deserve a United States Senator who will fight every day for the state’s middle class – and that is Jack Conway.”
