Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to push his fellow Senate Finance Committee members toward including a public option in their version of a health care reform bill.
The Page provides a brief look at his plans:
- He’ll offer an amendment to the Senate Finance Committee’s health care bill that will include a public option.
- Calls his plan a “level playing field option” because it would be required to follow the same rules as private insurance plans.
- Also says: “Any plan absolutely must be available to all Americans from the first day in order to successfully keep private insurers honest. So far, the co-op proposal and the trigger option don’t meet those criteria, but the level playing field option does.”
Most pundits now agree that the Finance Committee proposal is the last best chance for a bipartisan health bill. It will be interesting to see how successful Senator Schumer’s public option push is and, if so, what impact it might have on Republican support.
