Former Rep. Porter Turns Down Nevada Senate Bid

Former Nevada “congressman Jon Porter (R) officially announced that he’s not running for the Senate against Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in an interview with CQ’s Jonathan Allen,” Josh Kraushaar reports.

Since losing his re-election bid last year, Porter has been working for the law firm Akerman Senterfitt as its director of public policy. He had not previously ruled himself out of the Senate race, even though his new role would have made a statewide campaign difficult.

For Republicans, who’s left?

That leaves Rep. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) as the leading candidate among a dwindling group of recruits who could conceivably oust Reid. But Heller sits on the influential House Ways and Means Committee, making it a difficult sell for him to take on a well-funded (but potentially vulnerable) Majority Leader.
