West Virginia Senate: Manchin Maintains Lead in Rasmussen Poll

Gayle Manchin, left, listens as her husband West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin speaks to the media following a news conference at his campaign headquarters on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, in Charleston, W.Va. Manchin defeated Ken Hechler and Sheirl Fletcher in a special election and will represent the Democrats in the November general election to fill the void left by the death of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

West Virginia’s Democratic Governor Joe Manchin “still holds 50% support in his bid to be the state’s next U.S. senator,” according to a new Rasmussen poll.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in West Virginia shows Manchin’s Republican opponent, businessman John Raese, with 43% of the vote when leaners are included. One percent (1%) favor some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

In related news, The Hill reports that the “U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its state affiliate are backing Gov. Joe Manchin (D) for Senate in West Virginia.”
