Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) “introduced legislation Monday seeking to secure future federal money for stem cell research in light of an August court decision that deemed government funding in violation of law — a judgment that could potentially deal a serious blow to the research,” POLITICO reports.
Though an injunction against the original ruling has been ordered by the U.S. Court of Appeals, Specter said Congress should work toward a more permanent structuring of rules in order to encourage embryonic stem cell research to continue.
“I strongly believe that the funding provided by Congress should be invested in the best research to address diseases based on medical need and scientific opportunity. Politics has no place in the equation,” Specter said.
