Today, Senators passed the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act (S. 2799) by Voice Vote.
It would expand certain provisions under the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 and impose new economic sanctions.
You can read about these sanctions in the bill text, linked here.
As for the next steps, this legislation must be worked out in a conference committee with the House to work out different provisions included in their version.
Update: According to Reuters, this bill would “impose sanctions on Iran’s gasoline suppliers and penalize some of Tehran’s elites, a move aimed at pressuring Tehran to give up its nuclear program.”
The sanctions would “target companies that export gasoline to Iran or help expand the country’s oil refining capacity by, in part, denying them loans and other assistance from U.S. financial institutions.”
