Lawyers for Democrat Al Franken “are asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to move quickly on Republican Norm Coleman’s appeal of his election lawsuit loss,” the AP reports.
Franken’s lawyers asked in a motion filed Tuesday that the high court order all briefs to be filed by May 4 and that it hold oral arguments “very shortly” after that.
Coleman filed his notice of appeal Monday. He wants to overturn a decision by a special three-judge panel last week in which Franken came out 312 votes ahead in their lengthy post-election contest.
Coleman hopes to persuade the high court to require the counting of up to 4,400 absentee ballots that were rejected.
The legal team for Mr. Franken says “Coleman’s appeal should be expedited because Minnesota is entitled to two senators.”
