Yesterday, Senators adopted an amendment offered by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) to the concurrent budget resolution (S.Con.Res. 13) by unanimous consent.
This amendment would increase funding for the LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) from $3.2 billion to $5.1 billion.
According to an official government website, LIHEAP is a “Federally funded block grant program that is implemented at the State, Tribal, and Insular Area levels.”
It’s main purpose is to “assist low-income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes, that pay a high proportion of household income for home energy, primarily in meeting their immediate home energy needs.”
