Hill, Eikenberry Ambassador Nominations Approved by Foreign Relations Committee

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved the nomination of Chris Hill to be U.S. ambassador to Iraq and Karl Eikenberry to be U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, the AP reports.

Both now go before the full Senate for final confirmation.  They were approved by Voice Vote.

Notably, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) says he still plans to hold up Mr. Hill’s nomination.

Numerous other nominations were also approved by the panel.

The panel also approved several other nominations, including Philip Gordon to be assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs; Rose Gottemoeller to be assistant secretary of state for verification and compliance; Richard Verma to be assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs, and Melanne Verveer to be ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues.

The committee also approved the nominations of Esther Brimmer to be assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs and Timothy Geithner, who is treasury secretary, to be U.S. governor of the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Fund, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
