Although its been a foregone conclusion over the past couple of weeks, Senator Clinton (D-NY) has officially endorsed Senator Obama (D-IL) for president today while suspending her campaign. This sets up a general election contest between Senator Obama and Senator McCain (R-AZ), two sitting Senators.
The last individual to move directly from serving as a sitting U.S. Senator to president was John F. Kennedy in the 1960 election. Warren G. Harding also went directly from Capitol Hill to the White House after the 1920 election.
In total, only 15 Senators have ever served as president. No matter the result of the election this Fall, the history books will add a new name to that list.
