President Bush has signed legislation that extends programs under the Higher Education Act into law today. The bill, S. 3035, would temporarily extend the programs through June 30 of this year.
House and Senate negotiators had previously been working out their differences over legislation which would reauthorize the Higher Education Act and its programs. Those negotiations have been recently derailed by the health problems of Senator Kennedy (D-MA), who was a lead advocate for the bill. Both houses passed differing versions of a reauthorization of the act.
Programs under the Higher Education Act have not been fully reauthorized since 1998.
Update (7/31): President Bush has signed a further extension of these programs after the Senate passed the bill (S. 3352). They are now set to expire on August 15.
